Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPPs) are important planning documents for identifying and mitigating wildfire hazards. These plans are written with input from local fire agencies, governments and residents before being reviewed and approved by CAL FIRE. The CWPP development process is a thorough exercise that identifies and prioritizes efforts to reduce wildfire impacts for communities of all sizes.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program teaches community members about the potential disasters that could affect them at any time—and how to safely, responsibly, and efficiently respond to them. CERT educates volunteers in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, team organization, hazard awareness, and disaster medical operations.

CSUN Convenes Southern California’s Wildfire Prevention Leaders

CSUN Wildfire Summit by the Institute for Sustainability 2025

VRFSC’s Executive Director and Programs Manager had the pleasure of attending the Wildfire Resiliency Summit alongside key Ventura County Fire Department officials and regional leaders.

"On December 8, 2025, the CSUN Institute for Sustainability, with its partners. convened leaders who work in the field on wildfire resilience from across Southern California at the Ventura County Fire Department in Thousand Oaks for a daylong Wildfire Resilience Summit. CSUN staff and students helped create a collaborative spirit among the participants, who were ready to share the lessons they learned over years of devastating wildfires, including the Eaton and Palisades fires just 11 months before, said Institute Director Sheila Steinberg."
