Right to Repair
What is CASIS?
The idea of the consumer's right to repair has been gaining a lot of attention in the mainstream media recently. But it's something that AIA and the automotive aftermarket have been engaged in for years.

The Canadian Automotive Service Information Standard (CASIS) agreement, also known as Right to Repair, was signed in 2009. The agreement provides a framework for the voluntary sharing by OEMs of their service and repair information with the aftermarket.

Ten years after CASIS was signed vehicles are being revolutionized. AIA is taking the lead to bring the CASIS signatories to the table to ensure the agreement reflects this new reality and lays the foundation for the entire automotive industry – and the Canadian consumer to flourish in this digital era.
CASIS Timeline
2004 – 2006
  • AIA identified access to auto maker service information, training and tools as a priority issue for its members and worked with a coalition of industry stakeholders to seek a voluntary agreement with automakers. Automakers did not respond.

  • Bill C-425 was introduced, calling for a legislated solution to the sharing of automaker information with the aftermarket. The bill did not pass.
