Shannon Parks (aka Marguerite Gavin) has been a professional audiobook narrator for more than twenty years with over 500 titles, numerous Audie nominations and Earphones awards, and a devoted fan following. Audiofile magazine describes Shannon as having the “coveted ability to disappear as the narrator, letting the story take the limelight it deserves.” Her narration spans nearly every genre from mystery, fantasy, sci-fi , romance, and children’s fiction, to a huge variety of non-fiction work. Drawing on her decades of experience not only as a narrator but as a director, actress, and acting teacher in theater, Shannon’s work as an audiobook coach focuses on the art of acting in narration. She has been described as having a “magic ear, and an ear for magic.”

This class will focus on an exploration of acting and vocal techniques designed to strengthen and expand the audiobook narrator’s approach to character development, storytelling, vocal flexibility and range. Shannon uses her personal “vocal layering technique” to develop character specificity and differentiation in fiction narration.

The class will begin with an overview of techniques for character exploration in the prep stages of narration: given circumstances, need/obstacle/action, relationship and discovering the essential narrator voice; and progresses to a vocal layering technique for creating a specific and distinct voice for each character in the story. Students will have an opportunity to experiment with and implement the process with guidance and feedback from Shannon in the course of the webinar.
