OCTOBER 7TH, 2020
“Sometimes the most important thing in a whole day is the rest we take between two deep breaths.”

–Etty Hillesum

I love puzzles. I love word puzzles. Sudoku puzzles. But I especially love jigsaw puzzles. I find jigsaw puzzles to be relaxing as they provide a complete escape into an immersive hunt for the next piece and working towards a completed project. I enjoy that I can work on puzzles alone or with friends. I like that anyone willing has the ability to complete a puzzle. Although the length of time it takes may vary or the challenge may intensify, each piece can be found and placed accordingly to make a whole.

How are puzzles started? I personally flip each piece to identify it's pattern and color. As I flip, I sort. Edge pieces go to one side and groupings of like colors begin forming. Each piece of a puzzle has a predetermined place. The pattern, color, and congruent edges provide information making it possible to fit each piece together and know whether it belongs or if it should be set aside for a future match.

When puzzling, one may become stuck because they are determined to find the counter-parts to one renegade piece. The determination evolves into frenzy and the obsessive desire to locate the hidden pieces ensues. The antidote to this frustration? Step back. A renewed perspective encourages a pause and pushes the reset button to become unstuck.

Shocker! We all have renegade puzzle pieces in our life.

Consider what we are exposed to each day. In addition to day to day human interaction we bare witness to television commercials, advertising, social media, campaign montages, and the list goes on. It's as if we are tossed a handful of puzzle pieces at a time and are supposed to know what to do with them. But we kind of do, right? We identify them and determine their meaning and value, we sort them and foster understanding, and we lay them to the side if they don't belong: just like a puzzle. Maybe there is a part of the puzzle that you're stuck on. The pandemic? The election? Your work? Your family?
No matter the renegade piece, don't be afraid to take a step back. Resolve yourself to take a deep breath and allow the pool of time to create a pause. Use your pause wisely and determine if your focus is viable or if it is stuck. And lest you forget, puzzles do not have to be completed alone, you can always ask for help!

Keep smiling, keep sanitizing, and stay safe!
