POVITICA!
How do you pronounce that? Po-vit-uh-kuh? Poh-veets-a? No, we say po-va-teets-sa. But however you say it, it's delicious. There was a great article about povitica in the Lawrence Journal World. The article describes at length this wonderful Eastern European treat and mentions Signs of Life as the only place in Lawrence where it is commercially available.

As we gear up for another big season of providing Lawrence with povitica, we're finding that people want to know more about this amazing desert bread. The povitica we sell is made by the famous Strawberry Hill Bakery in Kansas City and comes to us fresh daily during the holiday season.

Povitica has been a staple at family holiday gatherings for generations. Making it at home was incredibly time consuming, so when given as a gift to someone outside the family it was meant as a sign of respect and received as a great honor.

But the baking of povitica is a dying art form. At Strawberry Hill, the tradition lives on with the help of a few dedicated bakers with a passion for what they do. They still use the recipe developed by the owners' grandmother and make and roll each loaf by hand before baking it to perfection. The dough is rolled out very thin, smothered with English walnuts or other delightful filling, then rolled like a nut roll, placed in special pans and patiently baked. Each loaf weighs in at a whopping 2.5 pounds!

  • Traditional English walnut
  • Cream cheese
  • Apple cinnamon
  • English walnut with cranberries
  • Strawberry cream cheese
We joke a lot about the differences between fruitcake and povitica. Fruitcake has long been the butt of comedian's jokes during the holiday season. It's the "treat" everyone loves to hate. Quite the contrast with povitica. If you give a loaf of this succulent delight to family, friends, or business associates, your name will be spoken henceforth with a hushed awe! Well, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but we can guarantee that the recipient of povitica from Signs of Life will love at least one gift they receive this year.
