Where do the music arts fit into the LCS educational program?

Our Board of Directors' approved 2025 strategic plan highlights a key goal of Langley Christian School to provide "innovative and impactful practices". This past year we have worked on articulating a clearer vision for the distinctive Christian educational program that defines who we are and what we do.

The performing and visual arts is an important part of the K-12 LCS educational program.

We have been making investments in staffing and designing for the future of arts education to ensure all students have opportunities to fully develop their gifts and build connection and community through the arts.

SPRING K-12 MUSIC ARTS SURVEY RESULTS

What have we learned about music arts education in our community?

In the spring we conducted an external audit and review of our music arts program. Thank everyone who participated. We collected 113 responses from the LCS community. There was strong representation from all three campuses: elementary (52.7%), middle (64.3%) and high school (58.0%)

61.1%

  • The desire for large ensembles remains strong, though not deemed the most important deep hope. "Somewhat" and "Most Important" made up a combined score of 61.1%.

76.9%

  • Worship Teams - currently under-enrolled at LCS - had the highest “Most Important” rating of 44.2% and the highest combined positive score of 76.9%.

62.9%

  • The HS music technology option received the highest combined favourable ranking of 62.9% of all options, despite it not receiving the highest “Most Important” ranking. This shows that most respondents may value modern music making media and technology and view their integration as essential to music program design.

76.1%

  • 76.1% of respondents responded affirmatively to the question: “Is it important to you that that LCS students are able to participate in at least one sport and one performing art/music activity or course without a significant scheduling conflict?"
  • Many respondents commented to the effect that they want to see quality, student engagement, and enjoyment of music in the music program. It is reasonable to believe that approximately 20% of the school community is very engaged in music arts education and values it highly as a pillar of the LCS educational experience.
  • Worship Teams, Large Ensembles, and Music Technology/Contemporary Music course options scored the highest in “Most Important” and combined favourability rankings. This suggests that contemporary music may be desired. Respondents do not necessarily seem to want a traditional wind and vocal ensemble-based music program only.

The key takeaway is that the community and students highly value music arts and want to establish a vibrant, thriving program.

MUSIC ARTS UPDATES FOR 2023-2024

How are we changing music arts at middle school and high school next fall?

In previous years we have employed 1.3 FTE spread across middle and high school campuses, comprised of two part time positions at middle school and one part time position at high school. The allocation was roughly equivalent to the interest and enrolment of students in music-related courses and exploratories. There has been a steady decline in student enrolment in the music program recently so we are motivated to recommend some changes based on information gathered from studying some of the region's best music programs, and our own internal feedback, focus groups and surveys.

Our vision for music arts is simple: Inspire and empower students through music to find purpose, build community and have eternal impact beyond our school.

We are excited to welcome Elizabeth Smith and Connor Murdock to lead our music program at grades 6-12 beginning next fall.

Ms. Smith studied music at the University of Alberta and spent the past two years as a fine arts teacher at an international school in China. She is a deeply passionate, creative and energetic teacher.

Mr. Murdock holds a masters degree in music education from Western University and most recently taught music at Southridge Academy. He also teaches music production at Kwantlen University, and for 8 years was the music director at Kelowna Christian School. Mr. Murdock will also provide administrative leadership, creative vision and support for school-wide performances as our Performance Arts Coordinator.

Both music educators were hired on the strength of their vision for the performing arts and their reputation for excellence as teachers of music. They are looking forward to collaborating with other outstanding teachers of the arts next fall. Some of our emerging plans are...

  • More time in the schedule allocated to music classes
  • Small ensembles, large concert bands, worship and choir
  • Opportunities to play, sing and perform traditional and contemporary music.
  • Opportunities to create, record and produce music.
  • A far greater profile in the community participating in large performance events, trips, festivals and school-wide events
  • Upgrades to our music spaces, instruments and equipment
  • The new middle school design includes a large performance space

We are excited at the opportunity to invest intentionally in growing our music arts programming at LCS and building on the historic tradition of excellence in music education.

"My deep affection for music started in junior high school and I continue to enjoy performing in choir, church worship, and also conduct in other performance settings. I am passionate about music, teaching, and kids. These 3 pillars are what motivate me to keep learning as I cultivate your child's love for music."

- Ms. Smith

"God has never ceased to provide for me and to consistently speak to me in multiple ways to steer me towards using my musical gifts for to bless others and give Him glory and praise – even amid profound pain, struggle, or trial. Whatever I’m doing, I want to follow where He leads and give Him the glory."

- Mr. Murdock
