Indiana Sees Record Mail-in Ballot Requests; Employers Encouraged to Make a Plan for Employee Voting
The Indiana Secretary of State's office reports 559,749 Hoosiers requested to vote by mail for next week’s general election, compared to just 155,584 requests to vote by mail in the 2016 election (Indy Star). And remember, early voting has already begun in Indiana. Find your polling location and times at https://indianavoters.in.gov.
Early voting lines are being reported as long in some locations and officials expect long lines on November 3. It is critical that you coordinate with your family and employer to make a plan to spend a couple hours in line to vote.
If you are an employer, consider allowing employees to use paid or unpaid time off to vote, and create a plan ahead of next week to maintain productivity and client services coverage for employees delayed at polling places.
7th Circuit Court of Appeals Upheld Indiana Election Law Prohibiting Individual Voters from Asking Courts to Extend Voting Hours
Aspire recently reported that a federal district court struck down the 2019 state law prohibiting an individual voter to petition the courts to extend voting hours on election day. The latest twist in this case reverses that decision; individual voters now still must seek-out and convince each member of their county election board to extend voting hours on election day.
