How to Forgive Yourself

(Without Becoming a Full-Time Monk)

Greetings!

Let’s be honest: if you spoke to your friends the way you sometimes speak to yourself, they’d have blocked your number and staged an intervention by now. It can be a tough call forgiving others but to give yourself a break is about as easy as assembling flat-pack furniture with instructions written by a poet on a spiritual journey.

Sometimes we decide we need to serve some sort of penance for past misdemeanours when we weren’t the bold, moral and decent self we thought we were or ought to have been. We often fall short of our own mark and that hurts who we think we are. Are we mad, bad or a deeply shameful human being? No just human and capable of goofing up, copping out and not showing up for ourselves and others.

It’s time to give your own humanity a hug and give yourself a break. Self-acceptance is a work in progress and one worth pursing for your peace and potential. Your self-esteem will thank you.

Let’s start the process now. We’ve all been there. If you are in doubt here are a few hints – you need to forgive yourself for:

  • Not speaking up for yourself/others to prevent an injustice
  • Being too scared to take up a wonderful opportunity
  • Not making peace with the shape, colour, size and age of your body
  • Loving whole-heartedly without a safety net
  • Trusting people you sensed would let you down
  • Letting pity for others excuse their bad behaviour
  • Thinking other people’s needs were worth more than your own
  • Playing small to fit in
  • Aiming low
  • Settling
  • Thinking you didn’t deserve more
  • Hiding your light
  • Not seeing “it” coming
  • Letting fear be bigger than your dreams
  • Not being “real” or telling the truth
  • Not saying sorry
  • Running on empty and making bad decisions
  • Neglecting your own wellbeing
  • Trying to be perfect to please someone (but it still not working)
  • Blaming
  • Always focusing on the worst-case scenario/catastrophising
  • Not getting “out” sooner
  • Waiting for others/the situation to change
  • Believing in their BS
  • Having trust issues and hiding behind them
  • Not appreciating you were always more than good enough
