Making the Most Out of Summer Vacation between Junior and Senior Year of High School

Summer break is the perfect time to get a head start on your college applications. There are many things a rising senior can do to prepare for application season. Below is a list of suggestions:

Finalize the list of colleges to which you wish to apply.
Start writing your college essays.
Complete as many college applications as possible.
Decide which teachers you will ask for letters of recommendation.
Study for ACT/SAT tests.
Create a resumé.
Prep your portfolio, video samples and/or audition requirements.
Complete any athletic questionnaires, go to athletic camps at your colleges of choices and start emailing the coach to let them know when you are playing your sport.

Tips For Each Grade of High School

9TH GRADE–FRESMAN TIPS:

Start learning about college. Look at the college information available in your counselor’s office and school and public libraries. Use the Internet to check out college websites. View college profiles. You may even want to start a list of colleges that might interest you.

10TH GRADE–SOPHOMORE TIPS:

Begin learning about the college admissions process. The college admission process is multi-faceted. Explore information provided by your high school counselor, online websites and advice from independent college admission counselors. Contact colleges that appeal to you. Write to schools and ask for more information about their academic requirements and any programs or activities that you’re interested in. It’s especially important to start this process now if you think you want to attend a military academy .

11TH GRADE–JUNIOR TIPS:

Make meaningful summer plans that balance your achievements with some relaxation. Reward yourself by taking time to relax and rejuvenate – while also partaking in a meaningful activity. Intern at a local company that specializes in your preferred field of study. Volunteer in your community. Get a part-time job. Or if you’re an athlete, consider a summer camp in your sport. These activities will signal college admission officers that you care about your future.

12TH GRADE–SENIOR TIPS:

Summer after Senior Year – Participate in any summer orientation programs for incoming first-year students. It is also a good idea to make sure you have student health insurance and a student health directive in case of any emergencies. Send Your Final High School Transcript – Many colleges require a final high school transcript. Contact your high school counselor to make sure this gets sent.

Say Thank You – To your school guidance counselor. Your recommendation writers. Your teachers. Your college interviewer. You should thank anyone who was especially helpful during the college application process. Showing your appreciation with a formal letter or an in-person thank-you will ensure your supporters’ testimony for years to come.
