Happy Summer, Unschoolers!
Summer is here!  Thoughts about unschooling fun and adventure for the season from founder Anne Boie, and activities to look forward to this fall (and how to fund your LWI experience with volunteer opportunities).

Hi Everyone! Happy Summer! We are just about 3 months away from our  amazing conference , and in the midst of summer vacation time. Even as unschoolers, we do take advantage of the beautiful summer weather to spend as much time outdoors as possible. We have several day/weekend trips that we are planning, and one big one, to meet up with  Osie 's family in Wisconsin Dells, and to visit some cousins in Chicago.

The Adelfang family
Osie, Anders, and their four kids are at the beginning and exciting "trial stage" of their new " Life Without Instructions." They are planning a summer-long road trip with their Beast of a truck, and Party Bus trailer.

We will meet up with them a few weeks into their trip, in Wisconsin Dells, WI, a place that my parents used to bring me when I was a kid. I plan on doing all of the "dangerous" stuff that my parents didn't allow. Kayaking, tubing, bumper boats maybe... Water slides for sure. My kids, and most unschoolers I have met, have such a  natural confidence (self-esteem!) about them that I never had as a kid, probably at least partly due to the fact that my parents usually decided for me what was dangerous. I do my best to let my kids do their own risk assessment, though once in a while I do let them know if I'm feeling nervous about what they are doing.

qanda LWI activities galore! Check out this small sampling...

We have so many activities, for kids of all ages, and kids at heart, already on the website that I can't possibly talk about all of them in the space allowed in this newsletter. You can see them here, and we are also still adding even more! Here are a few highlights, just some of my own personal favorites:

people-outside.jpg We plan to open the conference with Speed Meeting and Ice Breaker games. I, myself, am a bit shy and sometimes socially awkward, so I am really looking forward to this as a way to get to know everyone.

We will have a fully stocked Lego room, (Thanks Toy Brick Brigade!) with a giant conference table, plus plenty of floor space. The Lego room will be open all day, and late into the night.

Also for everyone, but geared toward the Litt les', will be the ongoing Body Art. We will have temporary tattoos and other embellish-ments available to use in any creative way that they choose. We will have a Henna session for older kids, teens and adults.

For the night owls, we will have a Late Night Music Jam each evening. We will have a few instruments to share (including Didgeridoos and a full drum set!), or you can bring your own. Also at night, we will have board games, role playing games, movies, and more set up by our  Teen Activity Coordinators .

I am very excited about the  Rube Goldberg Device  funshop. I can't wait to see what our amazing kids (and parents!) come up with!

Volunteers are needed for Littles' Lair as well as other jobs at the conference. Volunteering provides a price break on registrations, which we hope will help your family get here.
Littles' Lair
LWI is full of great content, and we want parents to have the opportunity to sit in on the sessions that interest them and give the topic their full attention.

Of course, parents are always welcome to bring their young children in, but this isn't always possible or conducive to the parent's concentration. Some kids will sit quietly and play, but many would be much happier running around doing stuff, a and hanging out with other r kids and adults who are paying full attention. That's where "Littles' Lair" comes in.

Please write "Volunteer at LWI" in the subject line and tell Anne a bit about your skills, family situation, and needs. It's important to us that  everyone who wants to attend LWI is given an opportunity to volunteer.
