The Piecemeal Approach to Affording Higher Education

Week 4: The Financial Aid Process

We’ve been talking about the piecemeal approach to paying for college—identifying as many funding sources as possible so you don’t have to rely too heavily on any one source.

So far, we’ve covered two important pieces: summer earnings and scholarships.

This week begins our discussion of a big topic: financial aid. We’ll be breaking it down over the next few weeks to explain specific aspects of the process in more detail.

Did You Know?

FAME offers free Financial Aid Information Sessions that cover the financial aid process, the FAFSA, and other ways to pay. Watch for local in-person events or live virtual sessions starting in September. You can also watch a recorded session on our YouTube channel.

At these information sessions, you’ll hear us reference a publication called PAY: Tips to Afford Higher Education. PAY is packed with lots of tips and helpful info on paying for higher education. Visit our website to access the free download or request a free printed copy.

These resources will help get you off to a great start! In the coming weeks, we'll dive a bit deeper into the financial aid process—how to apply, how schools determine your eligibility, and how to find schools with the best financial aid.

Feeling stressed about your finances?

We encourage you to use iGrad’s money mindfulness resources to help you reduce your stress and find clarity.

NEXT WEEK: We’ll focus on the first step: applying for financial aid. (Hint: It’s all about the FAFSA!)
