Ask an expert: How should PCPs treat patients at risk of substance use disorder?

"It is important to be aware that even limited or experimental use of a substance, including nicotine, alcohol, or cannabis, can lead to more regular, more problematic, or more severe use of that substance or other substances.

Screening and early intervention are vital to preventing the development of use disorders and shifting the trajectory of those who are vulnerable to use disorders in their adult years.

Becoming comfortable with one or two screening tools, initiating conversations with youth and their families, and being aware of your local resources can add up to having a huge impact on the patients in your practice."
