Bucks County Library Book Returned 44 Years After Checkout

For one Bucks County reader, over 40 years passed between borrowing a book and returning it!

Protecting Our Environment, edited by Grant S. McClellan, found its way back to the Yardley-Makefield branch of Bucks County Free Library on May 12, 2023 – 44 years after it was originally checked out.

Moving and Improving: Mehrez's Story

Mehrez loves to read the Wall Street Journal and the Sunday edition of the New York Times. Not just to stay informed, but to connect with the language, culture, and trends in the United States.

“It keeps us moving and improving,” he says. “The library makes sure everyone has the right access to free education and culture.”

Mehrez regularly visits the library with his family, but these days he does most of his newspaper and magazine reading from the convenience of home.

1,000 New Books – All Thanks to You!

Thanks to nearly $21,000 in donations received during this year's Bucks for Books fundraiser, the library can buy over 1,000 new books!

If you donated during this year's campaign, thank you for supporting our community's readers! Your generosity means the world to our team and to library users across Bucks County.

"Bucks County Free Library's collection is a shared community resource, so it's wonderful to see the community support it," says Holly Ambrose, director of collection management. "Keep your eye on library shelves, the catalog, and cloudLibrary for new books added because of you!"

One of the Cool Kids: Ayesha's Story

As a young child, Ayesha always looked up to the “cool teenagers” she saw shelving books at the Doylestown branch of Bucks County Free Library.

Now, she’s one of them.

“I like organizing and I love the library, so I took the opportunity,” Ayesha says of her volunteer role at the Doylestown branch. Once a week, she gives two hours of her time to shelving children’s and young adult books that have been returned to the library.

Now in her eighth month as a volunteer, Ayesha has shelved some popular series so many times that she can point library users right to them. “People will come in looking for a book and I’ll walk over and show them exactly where it is."

Stop and Smell the (New) Roses!

The next time you visit the Doylestown branch of the Bucks County Free Library, be sure to take a walk through the gardens! In mid-May, the library added 300 new perennials to the front, back and side gardens.

With umbrellas, water features, and tables and chairs, the back and side gardens are a beautiful place to work, have a snack or enjoy a book while surrounded by nature.
