Community Health Indicators Report Card
The Howard County Health Department (HCHD) released its Report Card of Community Health Indicators. This report card evaluates the health of Howard County residents across several key public health measures, including chronic disease risk factors, cancer incidence, and maternal and infant health. Highlights include a decline in cigarette use among adult residents. Survey results show a 39% reduction in smoking from 2019 to 2021. Read the Media Release here.

Howard County Food Resources Updated for the New Year
The Howard County Local Health Improvement Coalition (HCLHIC) recently updated the following food and nutrition resources: the Food Connection Map, the Howard County Food Pantries and Hot Meals brochures and the Food and Nutrition Resource Guide for Providers.

Want to get moving in the New Year? Howard County has plenty of free and low-cost physical activity programs for all ages, including access to free walking, biking, and running groups. Get the entire list of activities from CAREAPP here.

New Chronic Disease Self-Management Classes
Are you a Howard County resident living with chronic disease (medical problems that last a long time)? Howard County has community-based education workshops to help people manage their ongoing health conditions. These interactive workshops are designed to improve an individual’s self-management skills, help participants stay active and engaged, and build confidence in managing their health.

CEI's Green SEEDS Winter 2024 Internship Program
Community Ecology Institute's (CEI) Green SEEDS Winter 2024 Internship program application is open now! The 7-week program will run from January 24th to March 16th. Interns will participate in 2-hour sessions twice a week on Wednesdays (3:30pm - 5:30pm or sunset) and Saturdays (10am-12pm) at Freetown Farm, in Columbia. Get Schools Cooking Grant Opportunity
Whole Kids Foundation along with Chef Ann Foundation is offering grants to help school districts transition from highly processed meals to scratch cooking. Get Schools Cooking grants will guide selected districts through this multi-year transformative journey that includes in-person workshops for food service directors, on-site recommendations, along with peer-to-peer collaboration and access to a Technical / Equipment Assistance Grant.

Social Media and Adolescent Health Report
new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine offers nearly a dozen recommendations for social media companies, Congress, the U.S. Department of Education, and others to minimize the harm of social media use on adolescents’ health while maximizing its benefits. The report and supporting materials including a one pager for parents and a video is available to download.

Community Impact Navigators Needed
The Maryland Food Bank is launching a 12-week program, and is looking for community members to come on board as Community Impact Navigators. The opportunity involves helping fellow Marylanders navigate the ropes of government aid, share resources, line up appointments, and be a helpful point of contact. Navigators will receive training in benefits and resource navigation, a $150 weekly stipend, and Community Impact Team support. After the initial training period, the time commitment is 6 to 10 hours per week.

Howard County Unveils New Office of Agriculture
Howard County Executive Calvin Ball recently unveiled the new Office of Agriculture (OoA) located at West Friendship Park. This office will bring agricultural resources closer to Howard County’s farming community, including agricultural programs and staff in a shared space to enhance coordination.

CPR for Adults, Children and Infants Class Offerings
When a person goes into Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), their survival depends on immediately getting CPR. Howard County Fire & Rescue offers adult CPR classes for individual members of the community monthly. Classes are appropriate for those 12 years or older. Anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

NAMI Howard County Offers Free Mental Health Courses
Registration is now open for Winter courses at NAMI Howard County. NAMI Basics is a course for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental health conditions. NAMI Peer-to-Peer is a recovery-focused course for adults 18+ living with mental health conditions.

Gaming and Internet Addiction Presentation
The Howard County Local Children's Board is hosting a free virtual presentation on gaming and internet addiction. Presenter Dr. Aaron Weiner will explore gaming and internet use as a behavioral addiction, and how behavioral health professionals can most effectively treat clients who are struggling to control their electronics use.

New Overdose Data Dashboard from MDH
The Maryland Department of Health's new Overdose Data Dashboard illustrates fatal and non-fatal overdose trends in Maryland. The dashboard shows data by demographic group including age, race, ethnicity and gender. Please note that data from 2022 and 2023 are preliminary at this time and are subject to change.

Opioid Overdose Response Training
The Howard County Health Department (HCHD) offers free virtual training on Narcan: Register for virtual training.

In-person Narcan training is also available at the HCHD van.
