Howard County Food Insecurity & Community Needs Poster

Ms. Reena Rambharat, Director, Howard County Local Health Improvement Coalition (HCLHIC), presented the 2023 Howard County Food and Nutrition Survey data in the form of a poster at the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior Conference (SNEB) in Washington, DC in July. Howard County Food Bank's Mobile Market at Deep Run E.S.
|
|
The Community Action Council (CAC) of Howard County's Food Bank hosted three (3) Mobile Markets at Deep Run Elementary School in August to provide food items for families to fill the gap between the end of the free Summer meal program and the start of school. This initiative was part of the HCLHIC's Food Security Committee's efforts and resulted in 4,492 pounds of food distributed to 502 individuals within 113 households. Food items included dried and canned goods plus apples, oranges, bananas, potatoes, onions, green peppers, habanero peppers serrano peppers, salad mix, peaches, and sweet peppers. Community Health Fair at Midway Mobile Home Park in Laurel

|
HCLHIC and partners recently hosted a Community Health Fair at Midway Mobile Home Park in Laurel! Together we were able to provide a variety of services to the community including herb and vegetable plants, health screenings, COVID vaccines, and numerous partner resources. Watch the video! EmPOWERED to Serve Business Accelerator™: Maryland Black Farmers
|
|
The American Heart Association, supported by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, is launching EmPOWERED to Serve Business Accelerator™: Maryland Black Farmers. This is an effort to identify and support Black farmers in Maryland and increase access to healthy foods. Selected candidates will receive training in business and brand storytelling, work with a cohort of other Maryland Black farmers, and share their story at an in-person event in February for a chance at $72,000 in grant funding. MDPQC Parent and Baby Advisory Council - Members Needed

The Maryland Department of Health (MDH)'s Maryland Perinatal-Neonatal Quality Collaborative (MDPQC) is launching a ‘Parent and Baby Advisory Council’ and is recruiting for new members. The intention of this Council is to have parents, patients, caregivers, and community members work together with the goal of centering the family and parent perspective to help shape initiatives and improve birthing practices. American Lung Association: COPD Educator Course

Registration is open for the American Lung Association’s Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Educator Course, which takes place on October 5, 12 and 19. This course is designed for healthcare professionals and gives a thorough training on COPD. Scholarships are available for healthcare professionals in Howard County to participate for free! The Beta Tau Chapter of the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health and the Master of Public Health Program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore are hosting the Fall 2023 Advances in Public Health Lecture on September 12, 2023 from 1pm to 2pm. Dean Sarah Szanton from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing is the speaker and the lecture focus is: “From research to policy: thwarting health disparities among older adults.” Register and learn more.

Highlighted within is the work that is being done collaboratively with multiple partner agencies to address suicide across the lifespan through the Healthy Minds and Suicide Prevention Coalition (HMSPC). Opioid Overdose Response Training

The Howard County Health Department offers FREE Opioid Overdose Response Program monthly virtual trainings. In-person training and Narcan distribution also available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-2pm at the Harm Reduction RV in the Health Department parking lot.
