Welcome to Walktober: A Month Long Celebration of Walking!
Howard County is participating in Maryland's Walktober celebration by encouraging Howard County to “Walk, Roll, Ride and Move!” The Howard County Local Health Improvement Coalition (LHIC), part of the Howard County Health Department (HCHD), led a collaborative initiative to bring together partners to create a calendar of more than 40 accessible walking/moving events to be held across the County during October. America Walks Community Change Grants program supports the growing network of advocates, organizations, and agencies working to advance walkability. Grants are awarded to innovative, engaging, and inclusive programs and projects that create change and opportunity for walking and movement at the community level. Applications are open now through October 9th, 2023. Want to Become a Doula?
Through MOMCares, Howard County Health Department is now offering a FREE Full Spectrum Doula Training for Howard County residents to help address the current maternal health crisis and improve birth outcomes for Black families. Four training sessions will be held this November (November 4th, 5th, 18th and 19th) and participants are required to attend all four sessions. Apply HERE. Paving the Way to Oral Health Equity for Maryland Pregnant & Postpartum Individuals
Building on recent legislative oral health achievements in Maryland, a state-level workgroup was strategically assembled to address improvements in oral health for underserved mothers as part of the implementation of Maryland’s expanded Medicaid dental coverage window for pregnant and postpartum individuals. This group formed the Maryland Prenatal Postpartum Advisory Board (PPAB) and has released a procedure manual.
A Community of Families in Nature Walks
You are cordially invited on October 14th and 21st to Move Along Columbia Association pathways and enjoy the October weather. On these walks, visit and learn about pollinator gardens managed by CFIN (A Community of Families in Nature), stopping by a tot-lot or two and getting to know other community members in the fresh air! Learn all about breast health at the Pink Pathways: Navigating Women's Breast Health in Howard County event! Come out to the Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center parking lot on Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to hear from experts on the current state of breast care in Howard County, meet representatives from cancer care organizations, enjoy refreshments from local food trucks and more! Maryland Digital Equity Coalition Kickoff
Join with other individuals and organizations dedicated to bridging the digital divide in Maryland on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 10am.This event is your chance to connect with like-minded individuals, learn about the coalition's goals, and explore opportunities for collaboration. The event will feature networking and brainstorming opportunities, engaging presentations, and breakout rooms. Register for this event.
Howard County Recreation and Parks Fall Festival
Come enjoy an afternoon full of music, games, entertainment, food trucks, and more. This outdoor family-friendly event has something for everyone at North Laurel Community Center on Saturday, October 7, 2023 from 12pm to 4pm. Online preregistration encouraged but not required. Learn about Caribbean-based nutrition with the Jamaica Flava Mi Plate curriculum presented by Food at the Center starting on October 11, 2023 at 10am. Zumba® Gold Party-in-Pink
Come dressed in pink to show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month on October 23, 2023 at 10am! Zumba® Gold Instructor, Sweetie Zubar, will lead a high-energy workout featuring Latin, Pop, and International dance songs (no prior experience required) at Bain 50+ Center. Cost: $5; donations benefit the Claudia Mayer/Tina Broccolino Cancer Resource Center.

Age-Friendly Ecosystem Summit
Age-Friendly Howard County is a partner agency in the 2023 Age-Friendly Ecosystem Summit hosted by the George Washington University School of Nursing. This free, virtual event on October 3rd and 4th from 1 to 3pm (virtual) explores regional age-friendly initiatives related to ageism, inclusivity, communications, and creativity. Howard County Veteran & Military Spouse Owned Small Biz Expo
Howard County’s first Veteran and Military Spouse Owned Small Biz Expo will be held on Oct. 28 from 10am-2pm at the Howard County EDA/MD Innovation Center on Columbia Gateway Dr. in Columbia, MD. Come out to shop, eat and support our military community by signing up with our Eventbrite link. The first 25 that register and attend will be guaranteed a swag bag. There will be door prizes as well. If you are a business interested in participating, the completion of an Interest Form is required of potential vendors.
Howard County Resource Guide for Older Adults, Persons with Disabilities and Caregivers
Howard County Office on Aging & Independence offers a wide range of services to promote healthy aging, improve the health and quality of life for older adults and adults with disabilities to include exercise, nutrition programs and evidence-based programs. Choose from a wide variety of in-person or virtual fitness classes, explore your passion for flower arranging, fashion or birding, or join lunch at a center near you to reconnect with friends. Opioid Overdose Response Training
The Howard County Health Department offers FREE Opioid Overdose Response Program monthly virtual trainings. In-person training and Narcan distribution also available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-2pm at the Harm Reduction RV in the Health Department parking lot. Call Bureau of Behavioral Health at 410-313-6202, orpresponse@howardcountymd.gov.
