Yesterday, Howard University announced that Nikole Hannah-Jones and Howard alumnus Ta-Nehisi Coates will join the Howard University faculty. Hannah-Jones will be a tenured member of the faculty of the Cathy Hughes School of Communications, filling the newly created Knight Chair in Race and Journalism. Coates, journalist and author, will be a faculty member in the flagship College of Arts and Sciences. Hannah-Jones, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, will also found the Center for Journalism and Democracy, which will focus on training and supporting aspiring journalists in acquiring the investigative skills and historical and analytical expertise needed to cover the crises of our democracy. The center hopes to work across multiple historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) that offer journalism degrees and concentrations.
The appointments are supported by nearly $20 million donated by Knight Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and an anonymous donor, to enhance academic excellence and support Howard’s continued investment in education and the truth and service of storytelling from Black journalists.
“It is my pleasure to welcome to Howard two of today’s most respected and influential journalists,” said President Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA, president of Howard University. “At such a critical time for race relations in our country, it is vital that we understand the role of journalism in steering our national conversation and social progress. Not only must our newsrooms reflect the communities where they are reporting, but we need to infuse the profession with diverse talent. We are thrilled that they will bring their insights and research to what is already a world-class, highly accomplished team of professors.”

Enhancing Academic Excellence: Howard University Named Among Participants In Verizon $1M Scholarship for Female Students at HBCUs
Early this Summer, Verizon announced Howard University as one of five recipients of a new $1 million scholarship for female students at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Building on Verizon’s long-standing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and the need to address diversity as the gaming community grows, the Verizon Game Forward Scholarship aims to increase female representation in gaming and STEM. Support for the program is being provided by the Cxmmunity, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing the participation of minorities within the esports and video game industry.
This Fall, the scholarship will be awarded to a team of five female students pursuing degrees in technology at five HBCUs: Delaware State University, Dillard University, Howard University, Morgan State University and Texas Southern University. The 25 scholarship recipients will also be guaranteed internships at top tech and gaming companies, including Verizon and its partners, ensuring an increase in the pipeline of female talent into STEM careers.
The program will also fund the creation of tech centers on the campuses of the partnering HBCUs, which will be accessible to the entire school.

Audi Field to Host the Truth and Service Classic Inaugural Football Game on Sept 18
Audi Field has announced a strategic partnership with Howard University and Events DC to host the University’s annual Truth and Service Classic football game. This season’s game, which will be held on September 18, will become the first-ever college football game played at the 20,000-seat venue in downtown Washington, D.C., the home of Major League Soccer club D.C. United.
The new relationship between Audi Field and Howard University will see the Truth and Service Classic, which will operate as a home game for the Bison, launch this year with a long-term goal of an annual showcase game taking place at Audi Field under the Truth and Service Classic moniker. The first edition will feature the 96th meeting of the historic rivalry between Howard University and Hampton University, with future opponents set to be named at the beginning of each collegiate football season.
“It will be tremendous thrill, for me personally and for the entire Howard University community, to see our football team play at Audi Field in the Truth and Service Classic,” said President Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA. “In the aftermath of multiple sports seasons that were adjusted or canceled due to the pandemic, it is exciting to have sporting events to look forward to once again. The Truth and Service Classic this year will be a wonderful occasion to showcase the spirit of Howard. I am eagerly anticipating
this next chapter in the storied rivalry between the two HUs – Howard University and Hampton University. This competition, combined with our mutual respect for one another, is sure to bring out the very best in both of our teams and institutions. I would like to thank D.C. United and Audi Field for this opportunity.”
