Howard in Partnership with the National Gallery of Art Launch New Multiyear Undergraduate Internship Program
|

Howard, in partnership with the National Gallery of Art’s Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, has established a multiyear undergraduate paid internship program with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This four-year pilot program aims to create pathways to careers in museums and arts-related organizations for students from historically Black colleges and universities and other institutions that serve populations that are underrepresented in the museum field.
“We are thrilled to be full partners in the creation and implementation of this pilot program with the National Gallery. This opportunity enables both institutions, together, to act as laboratories for learning professional skills, for Howard students and National Gallery staff, while understanding both collections in new ways,” said Lisa Farrington, associate dean of the Division of Fine Arts.
The partnership was designed to ensure undergraduate students will thrive through the development of a program that centers on academic rigor and professional training.
“The National Gallery is honored to be working with Howard University to establish a program that will introduce students to academic art history and the museum sector. The National Gallery and Howard are deeply committed to the success of this effort, and with support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, we are confident that this program will be a major step forward in establishing a more diverse and inclusive museum field – one that truly represents our nation,” said Kaywin Feldman, director of the National Gallery of Art.
Through two-year undergraduate paid internships (including Summers), the center will welcome cohorts of six students per year, giving them the tools to conduct deep research and providing them with closely mentored experiences in different areas of the museum.

Cohort of 50 Howard Students Selected for 2021 Clinton Global Initiative University

|
Fifty Howard students were selected for the 2021 cohort of the Clinton Global Initiative University. The partnership with Howard University and Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) will provide students with a year-round program that will support them as they develop into impactful social entrepreneurs and leaders.
“At Howard University, we train students to shift the focus from their major to their mission because it is much more important that they discover their purpose in life,” said President Wayne A. I. Frederick. “The Clinton Global Initiative University perfectly aligns with that vision and our motto of ‘truth and service.’ I look forward to our students interacting with these dynamic thought-leaders and like-minded individuals as they embark on this invaluable journey.”
The 50 undergraduate and graduate students will receive training, mentorship and access to international experts and changemakers in their respective interests as well as networking activities.
“Howard students’ participation in CGI U is a natural outgrowth of their commitment to service. The opportunity to connect with other like-minded students around the world, all of whom have identified ways they can take a specific action to meet the demands of the communities they hope to help improve, is a unique one that we are happy to support,” said Dana Williams, Ph.D., interim dean of the Howard University Graduate School.

HU-RCMI Discussion on March 31
|
|
|
|
On March 1, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued a statement demonstrating the agency’s stance against structural racism in biomedical medicine. The NIH also announced the UNITE initiative. The goal of UNITE is to “address structural racism and promote racial equity and inclusion at NIH and within the larger biomedical research enterprise.”
To inform the systemic and structural changes necessary to achieve the UNITE goal, the NIH has issued a request for information (RFI). While responses to the RFI can be submitted by individuals, a collective institutional response can carry significant weight.
To facilitate a collective institutional response on behalf of the Howard University biomedical research workforce, the Howard University Research Centers in Minority Institutions (HU-RCMI) will facilitate a working meeting to draft an institutional response. Through small breakout group discussions, HU research stakeholders will share their insights and recommendations. The major areas of consensus will be combined into an institutional response to the RFI.
