Hubbard Hall Wins Its First Program Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in Support of Artist Residencies!
Hubbard Hall Center for the Arts and Education is thrilled to announce the awarding of $10,000 from the National Endowment from the Arts (NEA) in support of artist residencies. This is the first-ever program support of Hubbard Hall from the NEA in its 45 year history as a nonprofit.
Margaret Surowka, chair of the Hubbard Hall Board, says: "The NEA's support is a huge endorsement of our work and progress. It recognizes Hubbard Hall's leadership as an arts institution at the national level, and will help us gain even greater support for what we do."
David Snider, Hubbard Hall's Executive & Artistic Director, added "We are thrilled with this honor. The NEA is recognizing the importance of artist residencies at Hubbard Hall. We provide time, space, and funds for artists to develop their work in beautiful Cambridge, NY. The artists in turn bring their brilliant hearts, minds, and work to share with our community. We're establishing Hubbard Hall as another great residency site, especially with our partnership with The Bushwick Starr in Brooklyn."
Artist Residencies at Hubbard Hall
Focusing on the development of new and devised work in all disciplines, Hubbard Hall residencies invite artists to develop new work in beautiful, quiet, and artistically rich surroundings far from the noise and pressure of the city, and then to share portions of that work with local audiences via a final showcase sharing (reading, workshop performance or simply discussion depending on the project and artistic process).
This series also allows audiences to explore and learn about the development process and intends to support the development of local, regional and national artists and seeks to further develop our local talent pool through exposure to visiting artists. Typical residencies include honoraria for all participating artists and housing. Residencies can last anywhere from two-three days to two-three weeks and include a simple showcase of the work developed for the community, a workshop production of the work or even a full production.
In recent years, Hubbard Hall has developed new works festivals, produced several world premieres, established artist residencies as part of the Hall’s regular practice, and created a partnership with the Bushwick Starr in Brooklyn focused on incubating and developing new work to be fully produced at the Starr. Recent residencies have included Jillian Walker, Agnes Borinsky, Micha Rodriguez, Mei Ann Teo, James Harrison Monaco and Jerome Ellis, Rupert Holmes, and Twyla Tharp. Recent projects have included A Song of Songs, Preparedness, SKiNFoLK, and The Conversationalists.
Hubbard Hall and The Bushwick Starr
In November of 2019, Hubbard Hall and The Bushwick Starr announced a new partnership for artist residencies at Hubbard Hall in Cambridge, NY, in support of projects to be produced at The Bushwick Starr in Brooklyn, NY.
“This partnership is an extraordinary next step in Hubbard Hall’s ability to serve wonderful artists and incubate great new work through artist residencies, while enhancing our audience’s experience by exposing them to these exciting, cutting-edge artists from the city. I’m thrilled to join with Noel, Sue, and the entire team at The Bushwick Starr in supporting these artists and their work,” said David Snider, Executive & Artistic Director of Hubbard Hall.
“We’re thrilled to be working with David and Hubbard Hall to provide a nurturing and supportive environment ideal for the creation of new work. This partnership provides valuable, focused time for our season artists to take giant steps in their process and is the kind of mutually beneficial relationship we see as a model for how new work gets developed.” – Noel Allain (Artistic Direcor/Founder) and Sue Kessler (Creative Director/Founder) of The Bushwick Starr.
