Wayne High School
Wayne JROTC students give back through community service

Green Castle Cemetery is one of Dayton's oldest cemeteries, but it has fallen into neglect. This year, Wayne AFJROTC has partnered with the Sons of Union Veterans Sherman Camp 93 and other community groups to help cut grass, weed, and clean up the cemetery. On Aug. 26, JROTC provided 64 hours of community service.

Events such as these teach JROTC students skills related to planning, hard work, and teamwork. The next cleanup will be Sept. 23 at 9:00 a.m.

Wayne NHS collects donations for Harvey victims

Following the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, the Wayne National Honor Society (NHS) quickly pulled together much-needed items to send to victims in Texas. Donations included personal hygiene products, cleaning supplies, and first aid items. NHS also partnered with Engage City Church to collect donations from members of the community at the first home football game of the season. The students and advisors were happy to get involved in community service so early in the school year and look forward to completing other projects throughout the year!

Weisenborn Junior High
Kindness through words

Students in Mrs. Brown's and Mrs. Bissett's classes helped to share positive messages in the hallways of Weisenborn recently! The uplifting messages tie in to Weisenborn's building-wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) program, which is designed to encourage positive behavior.

Monticello gives to those in need

Monticello would like to thank its students and families for being so generous! In just one day, they collected hundreds of items to donate for Hurricane Harvey relief. We've always known our families were amazing, but the outpouring of support was remarkable!

Students support Texas hurricane victims

Students at Rushmore Elementary showed support for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Several classes wrote letters for Houston residents, which accompanied toothbrushes. Students learned about natural disasters and about how to best help those in need.

Rushmore students pay respect on 9/11

With the help of VFW Quartermaster Jack Brankamp, students at Rushmore Elementary lowered the flag to half-staff in honor of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Many classes discussed the events of 9/11 and why we remember those events each year on Patriot Day.

Special guests rev up the pep for Rushmore students

Valley Forge Elementary
Valley Forge kindergartners practice filling their "bucket"

To help start off the year, the kindergarten team read "Have You Filled A Bucket Today?" with students. This book emphasizes positive behavior by using the concept of an invisible bucket to show children how simple it is to express kindness and love by "filling a bucket." It also helps children understand that "bucket dipping" is a negative behavior but can be changed with one kind act.

New addition to Valley Forge library

Student Ana McCutcheon shows off the Valley Forge library's new book nook! The nook was built by Mr. Mark Zeller to provide students with a comfy space to curl up with their favorite books.

SOAR students become balloon artists

On the first day of SOAR for second and third grade, balloons were incorporated balloons into a theme on flight theme. All of our activities throughout the day involved learning across the disciplines with balloons.  Students ended the day with guest speaker Ms. Lea Craine from Children's Entertainment, who taught students how art and science relate to balloon sculpting. In her workshop she incorporated balloon origins, spatial reasoning, measuring, multi-step directions, friction, transfer of energy, pressure, temperature, and cause-effect. Each student learned to make three balloon sculptures of their own to take home!

Wright Brothers
Comfortable places double as reading spaces

Ms. Fenner's third-grade students are working on their silent reading. To encourage good reading habits, Ms. Fenner has created special reading areas with comfortable seating. The students look forward to the upholstered chairs, bean bags, and oversized pillows to relax and read!

Handwriting in the great outdoors

Ms. Hamilton's class took advantage of the wonderful September weather to get outside and practice their cursive writing. Mr. Sanders, Wright Brothers' custodian, maintains the courtyard so beautifully that the students love the opportunity to sit in the flower garden while practicing their writing.

Studebaker
Mobile dentist visits preschool

On Sept. 11, the mobile dentist from Ohio Dental Outreach came to Studebaker Preschool to do dental checkups and cleanings for the preschoolers. For many of the kids, this was their first dental experience.  Each child who participated received a toothbrush, a dental report card, and a parent information sheet on dental care and follow-up visits for their children.
