Hudson Catholic Mourns
the Tragic Passing of Coach and Teacher, Lamar McKnight,
and Asst. Coach Brad Cunningham '01
| |
Head Football Coach
Lamar McKnight
| |
Assistant Football Coach
Bradley Cunningham '01
| |
Early in the morning of December 7th, a tragic accident on Raymond Boulevard in Newark claimed the lives of Lamar McKnight, just 32 years old and our Head Football Coach and Health & Phys Ed Teacher, his Assistant Coach Bradley Cunningham '01, 41 years old, and the lives of four other men, including Lamar's older brother, Daryl.
The Hudson Catholic school and community is stunned by our loss. Lamar was an exceptional young man who quickly grew to be respected and loved among the Hudson Catholic administration, faculty, and student body. His Hawk Football Team has nothing but love for this man, who upon entering the halls at Hudson, instilled hope into the football program that had its 2023 season cut short by injuries and an insufficient number of available players, only to rise in 2024 to a remarkable winning season and State Playoff berth!
More than anything it was his infectious smile and optimism that endeared him to the larger Hawk community. Lamar was an All State QB at Lincoln in his playing days, and a true Jersey City guy. He owned and operated his own sports performance business, the Quarterback Academy, which enabled him to demonstrate his love for the game by passing on knowledge and skills to high school players looking to move to the collegiate ranks. [see BTL104 for his bio, at hudsoncatholic.org/btl]
Lamar came without great expectation to Hudson Catholic and, in a short time, made a huge positive impact on many students and adults, and we were all better for having experienced his being among us. Our prayers go out for the repose of his soul and that his family may find peace and strength to overcome their great loss.
Brad Cunningham '01 was a Hawk Football two-way standout at fullback and linebacker and a celebrated State Champion in shot put who had returned to Hudson this year to join Lamar's coaching staff. He was among Coach Greg Schiano's first recruiting class at Rutgers, playing as a four-year scholarship participant. Schiano was saddened to hear of the coaches' deaths, saying "Brad Cunningham was a member of our first recruiting class and laid the foundation of the Rutgers Football program."
Services were held on Saturday, December 28th for both men, for Brad at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Jersey City's Country Village at 930am, and for Lamar and Daryl, at 1200pm at St. Patrick's Church, also in Jersey City, on Bramhall Street. St. Pat's was Hudson Catholic's first church, of sorts, in 1964, when its parish school hosted our first freshman class while our current school building was under construction.

Message From The President
| | As many of you are aware, Hudson Catholic suffered a terrible tragedy on the morning of December 7th when Coach Lamar McKnight, Coach Brad Cunningham, Coach McKnight’s brother, Daryl, and three others were killed in an automobile accident. Our community was devastated, but if there is anything positive that can come out of a tragedy of this magnitude, it was the way in which our immediate and surrounding communities rallied together. Our Lasallian teachings and our faith in God were incredible sources of comfort and strength. To see our friends in the Bayonne Public School system, Jersey City Community Charter School, University Academy High School and St. Peter’s Prep immediately send counselors for staff and students was an incredible gesture of empathy and love. To have an alumnus provide food for our staff was a reminder that Hawks always come back to The Nest in times of need. The countless calls and messages reminded us all that Hudson Catholic is so much more than a school. It is an ideal. It is a mindset. It is part and parcel of everyone who it touches for the rest of their lives.
On December 28th, both Coach McKnight and Coach Cunningham were laid to rest in separate services attended by hundreds of people, including our staff members and students. On December 10th, however, our immediate family grieved together in St Aedan’s. I’d like to share with you, our extended family, the words I shared with our staff and students on that day:
"One of your classmates recently gave me one of those Swiftie bracelets that says Hawk Dad on it. I’m not one for jewelry, but I’ve been wearing this one. Over these past few days, I’ve found a lot of comfort looking at that bracelet. As a school leader, my most important job is to keep you safe. To keep you from getting hurt. And there is nothing more that I would want to do now than to keep you from the hurt we feel today. But, unfortunately, I can’t protect you from this hurt. I can’t change what’s happened. However, if there’s any positive thing to be found here, it’s that we are going through this together. As a family. And we have each other to lean on. And we have our faith in God. And that’s what makes this such a special community.
I know you feel angry. And cheated. And confused. And simply, sad. It’s okay to feel that way. But I do have to ask one question: What if we had never had Coach McKnight come into our lives at all? How much more cheated would we have been? Having magical people come into your life is a gift. But because they are so magical, there’s a bigger hole when they leave. It’s amazing to realize that Coach McKnight has only been with us for less than a full year. Yet look at his impact…on our lives, as well as so many others. If anyone ever tells you that one person can’t make a difference, you know it’s not true, because you had Coach McKnight. And boy did he make a difference. Yes, he was the Football Coach, but he was also our Health & Phys Ed teacher. And he cared. He cared about his students. And his colleagues. And he posted about the cheerleaders. And Girls Basketball. And every other one of our sports. He even posted about Rugby! He cared about every one of us. That’s rare and that’s special. And that was Coach McKnight. I don’t think I ever saw him not smiling in the hallways. He loved being here and he loved his job and he loved his students and he so loved his players.
Coach Cunningham was one of us from the time he was 13 years old. He sat in your desks and he even had Mr. Gazzale and Ms. Schreiber and Mr. McGady. He was an original Hawk. And he was incredibly happy to be back home as a coach. Those were his words, not mine. “I’m back home.” And that is what we are…a family with a home. This is and always will be your safe space and your home. I was so glad that our students and staff were able to come to school on Saturday and yesterday to be with each other. You knew you could come to your home in a time of need.
I went to see Coach McKnight’s mom on Saturday. She told me how happy she was that he was at Hudson Catholic. I told her that if I could have chosen anyone to be a mentor for our young men of the football team and our students in general, it would have been Lamar.mHe understood our mission and he wanted his players and all of our students to be more. He didn’t want his football players to simply be football players. He wanted them to expect more of themselves and others. To want more. To simply be more. He still wants you to be great men. Great fathers. Great husbands. Great leaders. And you know he wants you to stay together to finish building what was started.
We are allowed to cry. We are allowed to be angry. And confused. And to feel a little helpless. But we are not allowed to stop moving forward. That’s how we dishonor Coach McKnight and Coach Cunningham. We find a way to help each other during this difficult time and we honor their legacies by creating our own legacies in their image. We rely on our Lasallian values and our faith to do what they did..…to make the world a better place through our actions and our examples. And boys, they would want us to win a few football games along the way.
I ask that we all bow our heads and pray for all the victims in the words that Jesus gave us: Our Father…
Know that I love each and every one of you. We will get through this together."

Success of Year End Challenge
Was Never in Doubt
Hawks Step Up Yet Again to Earn Challenge Match of $40,000
| |
December being one of our most important months for our annual campaign for 1964: The Fund for Hudson Catholic, Hawks once again came through in grand fashion, giving $41,555 of themselves to earn the Hawks Nest a matching gift of $40,000 from a loyal, anonymous alumnus. Our Year to Date total stands at $96,572 of the $400,000 needed to fund operations for the year. To those who may work for companies that offer Matching Gifts, your donations can be matched yet again, to bring funding into Hudson from additional sources. And for those who prefer to spread their gift out over the year, go to hudsoncatholic.org/1964 to select the Recurring Gift feature -- great for budgeting your giving and still making for a meaningful gift. We thank all our supporters through the first half of what is shaping up to be a great school year for our 500 young Hawks!

"Live Jesus In Our Hearts Forever"
A note from the Chief Advancement Officer,
in thanks for those who stand behind Hudson Catholic
| |
We celebrated The Feast of the Epiphany on January 6th, commemorating the revelation of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, represented by the visit of the Magi, as well as his baptism in the Jordan River. It is an important Christian holiday that marks the end of the Christmas season in many traditions. But we must continue to dwell on Jesus on January 7th and each day following that.
In our Lasallian community, we very often pronounce "Live Jesus in Our Hearts Forever." Let's reflect on that.
The beauty of Jesus is that his existence doesn't depend on belief. Jesus simply is. His love doesn't ask for your consent. His grace doesn't wait for your approval. It's there - steady, unyielding -- whether you embrace it or not. His love is not transactional. It isn't earned. It is a gift, freely given, not because of who we are but because of who he is. Reflect on what it means to live with even a fraction of the courage, humility, and generosity that Jesus embodied. Whether you have a belief in Jesus or not, the example he set is powerful. He showed us what it looks like to choose connection over division, understanding over judgment, and love over fear. The invitation in the Christmas story is about presence, about showing up with an open heart and daring to believe that love -- unconditional, relentless, life-changing love -- is always worth it. Whether you celebrate Christmas in faith, in tradition, or simply in the hope of a better tomorrow, may we all carry a little more love and grace into the world today and every day. -- GF

Momber Retires from Student/Partner Alliance
Emmett Daly, President of the Student/Partner Alliance, has announced the intentions of Margaret Momber, a dear friend to Catholic education and Hudson Catholic, to retire from her role after 13 years served as the organization's Executive Director.
We feel sorry for ourselves because we are losing such a dedicated servant and staunch supporter of Catholic education. We could never thank Margaret enough for impacting the lives of hundreds of Hawks and students in our neighbor schools in such a profound way. But we do send her all good wishes for enjoyment in her next life chapter. They are well deserved. God bless, you done good!
Margaret will be succeeded by Kristin Shannon, Director, Marketing & Communications at S/PA, who will now assume the helm of leadership of this important organization that has played a vital role in the lives of many of our Hawks students over the years. We are confident that Kristin will continue to identify and attract many more of our S/PA Angels for Hudson Catholic. Best wishes!

Senior Leaders Make College Commits
Seniors Omari Moore and Keith McKnight have made their choices to attend and play basketball at their universities of choice, even before they lead this year's Hawk squad in search of glory at the county and state levels. Their camaraderie will be tested next year, though, as they will be competing against each other at the D1 level for schools in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Omari will become a Jasper and remain a Lasallian while playing for former Hawk and Assistant Coach at Manhattan College, J. R. Lynch '14. Keith will be traveling further north to Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut to join the Bobcats. We'll also get to see them play in their hometown when they each visit rival St. Peter's University, also a MAAC member. Congratulations are in order to these two star athletes, now let's go out and get 'em for our Hawks this year! Best wishes for the season ahead.

"Year one marks the beginning of our Challenge Series, but our vision for this brand and what it can mean for the future of New Jersey basketball is ambitious." Dom Calicchio ‘79, most recently managed news coverage at FoxNews.com for five years, where he supervised reporters and decided content for one of the most-viewed sites on the Internet. In 1984, he started his career at The Jersey Journal as a copywriter, reporter and copy editor. In 1990, he joined a New York publisher of tech magazines as a production manager, then moved to California, working in Silicon Valley, San Francisco and the East Bay for the Bay Area News Group and San Francisco Chronicle. Upon returning east, he edited and managed a magazine about Africa, and a local news website, then later worked for International Business Times on Wall Street, before joining Fox.

| | Updates on College and Pro Hawk Ahtletes at Home & Abroad. Tahaad Pettiford '24 and the Auburn University Tigers are now ranked #1 in the nation! Zanai Jones '21 (pictured), having played for the Villanova Wildcats and graduated in three years (started all 31 games and averaged 6.7 ppg in junior season), took her fourth year eligibility to graduate studies at Southern Methodist University in Dallas where she is starring with a recent 20-point performance in leading the Mustangs over Stanford in ACC competition. (Editor's note: Zanai remains the all time Hawk Girls Basketball leader in scoring and assists. As a Hawk, Zanai was a three-time All County First Team selection, Hudson County Player of the Year, Member of National Honor Society, and graduated with honors.) Taj White '22, an offensive lineman for Rutgers University Football, spent his Christmas Day in Phoenix, Arizona preparing for the Scarlet Knights' Dec. 26th Rate Bowl (broadcast by ESPN) opponent, the Kansas State Wildcats. Although Rutgers fell in the late going, 44-41, Taj proved to be a menacing force for the touchdown-underdog Knights, helping the Knights' ground game gain 164 yards in the season-ender for both teams. Luther Muhammad '18 is on the move again. Last time we checked, he had been playing professionally in New Zealand, following a stint in Finland. Once again, he has switched continents and is now playing in Stargard, Poland (a city of 67,000 on the Ina River, which was a site for POW camps n WWII and had to be repopulated by Poles after the war). Luther is scoring at a clip of 16 ppg in his last five games for PGE Spojnia of the Polish Basketball League. The club's profile of Luther makes mention of his high school years at Hudson Catholic! And, Louis King '18 has gone off to the People's Republic of China to play for the Fujian Sturgeons of the Chinese Basketball Association, which, according to our in-house Sports Desk Director, Peter Morales '74, is the second toughest league in the world after the NBA. The Sturgeons play out of Jinjiang, in the city of Quanzhou, province of Fujian, which borders the Taiwan Strait of the East China Sea. Louis' 2024 calendar year travels have taken him from Mexico City to Puerto Rico, back to Mexico City, where he played a couple of games in the NBA G League for the unaffiliated Mexico City Capitanes last month, and now on to the other side of the globe, to China. The man's clearly got game!

Former Jersey Journal Carriers Respond. Our article in the December issue about the impending demise of our hometown newspaper resulted in an outpouring of sorts. A number of Hawks stepped forward to proudly declare their association with the Jersey Journal, delivering the paper six days a week, door to door, pushing a grocery cart or on a bike. These Hawks, at one time, performed those vital civic duties: Anthony Calabrese '73, Mike Amoroso '74, Brian Altano '74, Tom Cantilon '74, Brain Earls '74, Lou Meluso '74, Bob Michelin '74, Robert Murray '74, Tom Western '74, William Brennan '76, Mike McKnight '78. And Jack Curry '82 may be our Hall of Famer, but, hey, he once had a primo route, delivering 106 papers daily! Dom Calicchio '79, spotlighted above, recently wrote some posts on Facebook and LinkedIn regarding his own time at the Journal, which can be found at Activity | Dom Calicchio | LinkedIn.

Hawks Abroad Q&A
Q: Hey, Rob Schumann '04, of Stuttgart, Germany, what is your favorite spot in-country during the Christmas Season?
A: My favorite spot during Christmastime would have to be the Christmas Markets (Weihnachtsmärkte) that can be found in most cities in Germany. These markets bring in the Christmas spirit, being heavily decorated for the occasion and serving Christmas goods and food. It’s nice to grab a Glühwein (Mulled Wine) after work with friends/colleagues and walk through the markets.

Would you buy a book from this man? The indefatigable Brother Albert Lautenslager FSC, a Hall of Fame member of our Founding Christian Brothers, and the longest serving Brother of the Christian Schools from our school's inception in 1964, in addition to bringing us all closer to our Latin roots in the classroom, manned the Bookstore for many years, hawking school supplies and Hudson apparel for "a mere ? cents." As the ofttimes indelicate Larry Basinski '70 once regaled a De La Salle Senior Awards Dinner, with parents in attendance at The Fiesta, in recalling Brother Al, "As a language, Latin is dead. Unfortunately, so is Brother Al." The man who gave us the legendary and eponymous BIG AL BURGER in the Castle Hall cafeteria passed away in 1978 while in residence at McGinley Square. God bless Brother Al, "The Kiddies' Pal."
