Facilities Update: Fence Line Maps for Natatorium and Ellsworth Hill Renovations
|
|
|
As construction continues at the Hudson Middle School, the Ada Cooper Miller Natatorium and Ellsworth Hill Elementary will start the renovation process. The Natatorium project began in March, and Hammond Construction will begin at Ellsworth Hill in May.
The Natatorium, heavily used by the District for HHS Swimming and Diving teams and the 4 & 5th grade PE program, also is used for Safety Town swimming lessons, community public swim sessions, and the HEAT youth swimming program through HCER. The 1979 Natatorium will undergo improvements, replacements and additions, which are shown in the
PowerPoint
presented to the Board of Education by Hasenstab Architects.
Ellsworth Hill will undergo construction to provide an additional 14,000 square feet (including 11 classrooms) to accommodate first and second grade in the 2020-2021 school year.

Healthy Cleaning. Healthy Environment. Healthy Students.
|
Our schools and community are working together to improve the safety, health, and well-being of our students. Some of the changes we have made to help improve our classroom and building environments include addressing food and air-borne allergies. In addition, we transitioned to green cleaning products to protect our students and staff from exposure to toxic cleaning products, particularly those who may be compromised by asthma, cancer, or auto-immune deficiencies.
Watch your email next week for more information regarding Healthy Cleaning. Healthy Environment. Healthy Students.

Star Jumper: A Project-Based Learning Experience
|

As part of the One Book One School project, Evamere Elementary read
Star Jumper: Journal of a Cardboard Genius

In December, Superintendent Phil Herman introduced the book to the building with a
video, and a challenge to create something out of recycled materials. Each week, teachers Lauren Fenimore and Jonathan Shaw, would share video check-ins and challenges called "Think outside the Box Thursday."
Classes made robots, cars, gardens and more using recycled materials. Check out some of the photos from Katherine Politano's classroom, where her students worked together to make a reading robot.

Messages about inclusivity and belonging become art in the hands of Hudson Middle Schoolers
|
Thanks to the Hudson City Schools Foundation, students in Nicole Rice's Sculpture Class have been working with reknowned artist Angelica Pozo since December to learn design concepts and to build the art skills needed to create ceramic tiles that deliver a profound message about inclusivity and belonging. The tiles will be displayed in the Middle School and later incorporated into tile cubes for public space artwork on the grounds of the new Middle School. The video was produced by Hudson High School Video Production students Jay Boyden, Jameson Kane, Paul Schwieterman, and Keane Morris.

HHS Geometric Design Course
|
The Geometric Design course is a project-based, interdisciplinary course that mixes the skills and techniques of Industrial Design with the concepts and procedures of Geometry. As students learn geometric facts and relationships, they further explore those ideas through projects such as bridge building, wood-work, pyrography and various other media.
The Geometric Design class visited the Cleveland Museum of Art, recently, where a special tour was designed to examine the use of geometric concepts in artwork. Students explored concepts such as symmetry and transformation, as well as, many of the intricate uses of shapes and angles to attain particular effects. They then created their own art pieces based upon one or more of the works they saw at the museum.
