Once in Need of Saving,
Anthony Capuono ’09
Becomes the Rescuer
On November 12th, a former Hawk swim star turned Bayonne lifeguard and the right man in the right place went for a rather cold swim in a very unexpected place -- the Newark Bay! - diving in from Stephan Gregg Park in Bayonne to save a 68-year old motorist just before his car sank, about 50 feet from shore.

Anthony himself had to be saved by paramedics 11 years ago, his brother Michael being among the first responders! Anthony was 17 and a student at Hudson Catholic when he was struck by a train, and lost a leg, in downtown Jersey City. He had finished his lifeguard courses just before the accident.

Today, Anthony is a lifeguard and swim coach at Bayonne’s British Swim School. But now he is a local hero and celebrity, as ABC, CBS and Fox picked up the story. A few days later, his beaming face appeared by zoom on ABC’s Live with Kelly and Ryan show. Hanging in the background, visible for all to see, was Anthony’s Hudson Catholic shirt!

Anthony represents the best in us all and we are proud to call him a Hawk!

Ultimate First Responder,
Hall of Famer Bill Keegan ’73,
Aids Other First Responders

A hero of 9/11, Ground Zero Night Commander Bill Keegan led the rescue and recovery efforts on site for nine months. He subsequently retired as a Lieutenant from the Port Authority Police Department and founded HEART 9/11, a volunteer first response organization that deploys to natural and man-made disasters throughout the western hemisphere.

On January 14th, along with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, HEART 9/11 will co-sponsor a panel discussion on Stress Management and Resiliency Training for First Responders, as part of HEART 9/11’s SMART Program for First Responders. Keegan, who has counseled first responders to the Newton, CT school shooting tragedy, among others, is a sought after speaker on subjects such as this, and crisis leadership, and will be among the panelists who will share their expertise among their fellow first responders. Contact HEART 9/11 for more information.

In Remembrance of
Robert Nyugen ‘93, JCPD
End of Watch 12/25/05

We remember Jersey City Police Officer, Robert Nyugen, one of our own, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on Christmas night 2005, along with his partner Police Officer Shawn Carson. They were members of the Emergency Services Unit.

Robert is remembered by Mr. Phil Gazzale as being a fine, hard-working student in his Honors Biology 2 class, and playing on the school basketball team.

The officers perished when their patrol truck drove off the Lincoln Highway Hackensack River Bridge (Rts.1&9) in Jersey City in dense fog, falling 45 feet into the Hackensack River.

That bridge was subsequently renamed for the officers.
