• Our safety class is watching the film, “Gracie's Choice.” This is based on the true story of a young teen who overcame tremendous lifetime obstacles, including foster care, a fatherless home, and having an addicted mother. Students discussed the film, sharing perspectives and feedback.

• We have started introducing laws to students, focusing on those governing drinking and driving. Each student was given a scenario and determined which laws were violated. Students discussed a variety of laws in our nation and shared opinions as to whether these laws are adequate.

• In physical education and wellness instruction, students reflected on 2021 and spoke about their hopes for 2022. Students discussed the importance of school, home/family, and friends, and how they planned to successfully navigate each in the new year. 

• In the Contemporary American Society class, there were discussions on federalism, and how the government has responded to the pandemic at the local, state, and federal levels. Students reviewed actions taken by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state and county departments of health. Next up will be discussions on the balancing of civil liberties with COVID-19 mandates. Students are very interested in this topic.

• Students went on virtual field trips to NYC! They visited the art installations on the High Line, walked up the steps on the vessel at Hudson Yards, took the elevator to The Edge’s Sky Deck, and walked across the Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn Park.

• Our Leadership students are researching current local and national issues and will be creating fundraiser proposals for appropriate organizations to address the needs they identify.
