Human trafficking is not something I like to think happens in my congressional district, but the reality is, it does. Every day, girls and boys, men and women are forced into modern day slavery and sold for their labor or for sex, and it happens right here in our community. I have met with federal agents, local law enforcement officers, and prosecutors and have heard firsthand about their involvement with human trafficking cases in my congressional district and how these tragedies begin.
Do you know the signs of human trafficking? Do you know who is vulnerable and who these predators target? Who would you call to report suspicious activity? January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. In recognition of this day and throughout the month of January, I am asking you to check out the Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Campaign and educate yourself about this heinous crime.
At https://www.dhs.gov/blue-campaign you will find a variety of educational materials to help you recognize the indicators of human trafficking and how to appropriately respond to possible cases. Our families, workplaces, schools, and churches must be informed to protect our communities. Thank you for working with me to get rid of these predators, and together, we will make the First Congressional District a safer place.
