Hello, Upper Valley!

This week, we’re featuring discussions on the year’s inescapable topic: AI and its impact on arts, sports, media, and everything imaginable. At JAM, we try to show the human side of digital media –– for example, we occasionally include a segment called “Your Human Algorithm” on this newsletter. Every featurette includes a short interview of a JAM Staff member, each of whom makes our digital content creation engine run.

Similarly, we’ve been having ongoing conversations on AI and its usage in our spaces. Our latest move has been to draft an AI policy –– we have decided to discourage the use of AI in our media education and Media Maker community. Read our policy and feel free to send us questions about it; we welcome all discussion on this ever-changing topic.

This week's Upper Valley features

Cross-country running in the age of AI. How do you rank runners who never raced each other? Dartmouth Professor Bijan Mazaheri attempts to answer this question with LACCTiC, a program he built that compares competitive runners.

An NCAA Division III runner himself, Bijan discusses how AI can fall short when synthesizing information from multiple data sets, and why he believes the liberal arts will become more valuable as AI becomes further integrated into our lives. 10/3/26 Produced by Rick Russell for JAM.

With modern rock packaging, Insun Park stands out as one of the few female masters of the Gangnyeong Mask Dance, an artform designated as Korea’s National Intangible Heritage. Watch Park and the Generals give a joyful performance with musicians from Tuck’s Rock Dojo at the Lebanon Opera House. 9/30/26 Produced by Jordan Slusser & Jordyn Lich for JAM

Life, deeply examined. In this Norwich Bookstore author talk, poet Michael Brosnan attempts to find meanings or patterns in the great mystery of life in his book Pareidolia. “Pareidolia” is the ability to see pictures out of randomness (like a Rorschach test). 9/3/26 Produced by Richard Neugass, Jan Abbott & Rayce Gilbert for JAM.
