Athens County Humane Society

I'm honored and excited to introduce myself as Executive Director of the Athens County Humane Society. This organization of volunteers has been doing wonderful work in our community for 115 years.

Community is the key: this work is a group effort. We're fortunate to be able to partner with other tremendous organizations helping animals in our area: the Athens County Dog Shelter, Friends of the Shelter Dogs, BARC, and the Athens Veterinary Clinic.

This Spring Newsletter gives a glimpse at how ACHS is taking action on behalf of animals in our county. If you have questions or thoughts to share, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me: mary@athenshumane.org

Athens cat lovers are providing furever homes

ACHS holds two Cat Adoption Days each month, on the 1st and 3rd Sunday at Friendly Paws Pet Supply on State St. in Athens. April 6th saw the highest attendance ever! Beautiful healthy cats and kittens found their “furever” homes. The store was filled with folks finding new best friends. With their applications pre-approved by ACHS, they were here for the best part: choosing! That includes cuddling, petting, and visiting with our foster volunteers who’ve been caring for these kitties.

ACHS prepares cats for adoption by making sure they’ve had good veterinary care including vaccines, worming, and of course all are spayed or neutered. Join us on some Sunday soon, just for the fun of it!

27 dogs rescued at once

Our Humane Agent, Andy McDonald answers the call in cases of animal abuse. In February, twenty-seven Lhasa Apsos in dire trouble were rescued and are now safe. This was possible only because so many in the community worked together along with ACHS. Extraordinary thanks to the Athens County Dog Shelter, Friends of the Shelter Dogs, Athens Veterinary Clinic, BARC, Friendly Paws, and the volunteers who cleaned cages, fed the dogs, and transported them to rescues!

ACHS volunteer Rod Sauer drove a carful of Lhasa Apsos to a rescue in Akron. The dogs hated his classic rock radio—howling and barking! So Rod switched to Frank Sinatra and they settled right down and had a nice quiet ride!
