We LOVE big mutts and we cannot lie!

Maybe you’re looking for a loyal running buddy to join you on outdoor adventures or a cuddly couch potato to help you catch up on your shows? No matter what your summer plans are, chances are we’ve got a big dog who will fit right into your life!

There are so many dogs waiting so patiently for adopters to give them the love and stability they deserve. You’ve heard us talking about the capacity crisis that shelters across the country are experiencing. Big dogs are some of the most vulnerable animals when our rescue partners have to make hard decisions based on the number of dogs they can humanely house. Earlier this month, one Bay Area shelter announced that they had 75 big dogs but a capacity for just 73 – and they have an average of 10 dogs arriving daily.

We are continuing to respond to desperate pleas from our North Bay partners each day to help save as many lives as we can. And, simply put, placing more animals in loving homes is crucial to our ability to do this. Here are just a few of our sizable sweeties who are ready for their summer (and lifetime!) of love to begin.

Would you help us spread the word? Let’s help ‘em Go Big and Go Home!

Harley

Train for the Summer Olympics with Harley!

You don’t need to wait until next summer to find out who wins the gold medal in “fetch” – it’s Harley, every time! We have some world-class fetchers at HSSC right now and Harley is the undisputed champ. At 2 years old and a fit 66 lbs., he’s looking for an active family who digs training as much as he does! He also loves playing with toys and exploring his surroundings.

MEET HARLEY

Vegas

Party Down with Vegas!

If you’re looking for a dog who’s goofy, affectionate and will keep you entertained with his silly demeanor, you should go all-in on Vegas! At 5 years and 3 months, he loves playing with toys, getting in all the sniffs, and receiving back scratches. Vegas weighs 66 lbs. and is s-t-r-o-n-g! He’d love to win the jackpot with a home that will continue his training.

MEET VEGAS

Tosh the dog

Nosh with Tosh

Tosh is the epitome of a loyal companion. Although he can be a bit nervous as first, he warms up quickly with snacks and a gentle approach. Once he feels comfortable, his 63 lb. silly side comes out! He loves to play with toys, go for walks, and get lots of scratches. And did we mention Tosh is very food motivated? Snacks are the way to this handsome 3 year-old’s heart and he would love to continue his positive reinforcement training at home.

MEET TOSH

Otis

Curl up with a good book... and Otis!

Sweet, smart, introspective, and outstandingly loyal, Otis weighs in at about 67 lbs . With his thoughtful demeanor, keen nose, and sharp observational skills, Otis would probably make a great detective... if he were a little more adventurous. Alas, this cautious and sensitive almost 4-year old would no doubt prefer solving more mundane, low-stakes mysteries such as "The Case Of The Missing Chew Toy" or "What Is My Owner Cooking For Breakfast?"

MEET OTIS

Smushie the dog

Strength training… with Smushie

Smushie is more than just a handsome blonde! At 7 years young and 65 lbs., this sensitive senior sweetie is strong, affectionate and a bit of a goofball. He wasn’t exposed to much guidance or training as he was growing up, but is ready to learn from a patient and caring companion. He needs his new crew to be experienced, strong and dedicated to catching him up on some of the training he missed in his younger years!

HEALDSBURG HAPPENINGS!

Animal Adventure Camps in full swing!

Campers at the Healdsburg Shelter are participating in a wide variety of fun and educational activities this month – like meeting a sweet special needs kitty, learning about chickens, watching a clicker-training demonstration, performing “intake exams” on beanie babies, and making salads for our Guinea pigs! We love nurturing the next generation of humane heroes!

Shelter Medicine

Link and Zelda are 5-month-old kitties who came to HSSC in desperate need of a second chance. One of our rescue partners reached out to us to see if we could take them in – their shelter was bursting at the seams and the two “teenager” cats had tested positive for ringworm and had multiple severe lesions. Ringworm is treatable but it’s a highly contagious infection and requires intensive treatment protocols and several weeks to cure. While we were treating them for ringworm, they also came down with upper respiratory infections and tummy troubles.

Link and Zelda also have Cerebellar Hypoplasia, a condition that can occur when kittens are in utero. CH can affect balance and coordination but it’s not progressive or painful. Their future adopter will need to keep them as indoor-only cats and make some simple accommodations so they can live a long, happy life.

In spite of the bumpy start these kittens faced, they put their full trust in us and showed us their sweet, affectionate and resilient nature. We’re so excited to find a home where they can be safe and loved forever!

Petco Love - A Non-Profit Changing Lives

It takes all of us working together to give animals with special medical needs a fresh start. We’re grateful to our rescue partners for our shared goal of positive outcomes for all animals, to Petco Love for their investment into our lifesaving work and to YOU. Your compassionate contributions to our Angels Fund make all these second chances all possible.

Thank you! ❤️

Something to Smile About!

We are excited to announce that we recently received a new grant from the Grey Muzzle Organization! Our Grey Muzzle grant helps senior dogs like Gracie who come to our CVC in urgent need of dental care. Gracie’s guardian was concerned because her adorable, 15 year-old Chihuahua mix was experiencing pain and losing teeth. During the initial exam, our CVC team noted that Gracie’s teeth and gums had heavy calculus and discharge. She also had oronasal fistulas (openings between the oral and nasal cavities).

With support from our grant, we were able to provide the dental care Gracie needed. Her procedures went well and she had a smooth recovery from anesthesia. Now, her overall oral health has improved along with her overall well-being!

We are so grateful to once again be partnering with the Grey Muzzle Organization to provide this specialized care, keeping older dogs like Gracie smiling and healthy in their golden years!

Thank you Grey Muzzle! And, thank YOU! Your support of our CVC helps keep beloved family pets healthy and in the arms of the families who love them!
