Humanity First Student Organizations: a busy summer to an exciting back to school season

Summer Highlights

In June, student-led The Education Project received funds from the City of Toledo for a summer program at Keyser Elementary School. The program gave 30 students extra academic support to prepare for the next school year.

Also in June, a team from Northville High School in Michigan spoke about the Humanity First Student Division (HFSD) and Gift of Health medical missions at June’s HFUSA Dinner in Detroit!

The July Gift of Health mission led by the Loyola University HFSO treated 385 people in southern Mexico for general health, dental health, and chronic conditions. Children were given free dental care products like toothpaste.

The annual Humanity First Student Division Leadership Summit was held at the University of Michigan in August

Humanity First students from across the USA convened at the University of Michigan to attend the 4th HFSD Leadership Summit. This year, 65 students from 18 active Humanity First Student Organizations (HFSOs) shared their experiences with peers and pitched their ideas to the HFUSA leadership.

The agenda was packed. Leadership workshop sessions led by exemplary HFSOs - University of Toledo, Northville High School, Loyola University & Binghamton University - gave students ideas and inspiration for the upcoming school year. Students assembled 200+ care kits for the homeless in Michigan, organized by the HFSO at Michigan State University. A panel of HF students who have joined Gift of Health medical missions shared their experiences on these trips.

Mujeeb Ijaz, founder of Our Next Energy and Chief Development Officer HFUSA, and Adeel Malik, founder of Clearstep and founder of the pioneer HFSO at UMD, provided detailed feedback and insight on student Shark Tank proposals and research presentations.

Disaster response training was led by the HFSO at UToledo College of Medicine for students to practice CPR, blood pressure monitoring, and basic wound care.

Rogelio Martinez, leader of HF-UToledo College of Medicine (UTCOM)

“I was introduced to [Humanity First] by the executive board members over at HF-UTCOM. And not only through them but also through the disaster response training course I did back in September of last year, this really solidified my belief in Humanity First and how they truly want to serve as many people as they can.”

A young woman sits at a table and addresses others through a microphone she holds. In front of her on the table are blue bags bearing the humanity first logo.

Daaniyah Mirza, Treasurer of the HFSO at Loyola University Chicago

"I was really looking for a space where I would be able to continue to remember the reason why I want to go into medicine. And that is the patients. Through the Gift of Health trip I felt like I really found a spot where that is the focus, and everything that you do is connected to finding a way for our actions to better impact the world.
