The word "kula" in our name literally means "community," and every human member of our community is vital to what we do. Every once in a while, though, one person's unique story jumps out and asks to be told. This is the second in a series of stories that we call "Humans of Kula."
Meet Maria Salvatore
Maria is not only an inspiring volunteer teacher for Kula for Karma at Integrity House (a halfway house for women in recovery); she also happens to be one of the newest members of our Board of Directors!

Based in Northern New Jersey, Maria has found her niche with a special group of clients: those who suffer from anxiety, depression, and addiction and trauma. She resonates with teaching to these clients because their stories of struggle and healing mirror her own. "My primary intention," Maria says, "is to help people learn to heal themselves."

In late childhood/early adulthood Maria was plagued by addiction, body image issues, and broken relationships. After hitting bottom, these experiences eventually led her to heal and transform mind, body and soul. She experienced it as "alchemy," left her corporate job, and went on to become a yoga teacher and studio owner. From her hometown of River Vale, she has taught happiness, global awareness, and joyful living for years.

When she is not in the yoga studio, you can usually find Maria walking her Chesapeake Bay Retriever, riding horses with her daughter, or spending time at home with her husband and two cats.

Rather than telling more of Maria's story here, we think it's best to let her tell you herself! In April 2018, Maria spoke on behalf of Kula for Karma at our Mindful in Manhattan event, sharing her story as only she can. We invite you to watch Maria's speech in the video below, and join us in congratulating her on joining our Board of Directors.

How Yoga Helps Healing Trauma and Addiction

Earlier this year, Maria also shared her story in more depth on our Facebook Live platform, interview-style. Watch that conversation on Facebook.
