Humility Helps
It has been etched in most of our brains that being successful means being strong, independent individuals who are profoundly self-reliant. This type of thinking generates shame or guilt when asking for help with even the most complex of problems, much less the simple. Unintended consequence? A barrier for self-growth. How can we overcome? Humility.
Step 7 inserts humility into the recovery process. We must be humble within ourselves and know when to seek help, in our recovery, responsibilities and relationships. When asking a Higher Power to remove our shortcomings, we begin to let go and accept the flaws as small facts but not the fingerprint of our total identity. It is important to stay humble and recognize our shortcomings to continue transitioning into the best individuals we can be. When selfishness or pride get in the way, personal growth suffers. Humility is equal opportunity, one we can all practice, in and out of recovery. Truth be told, the help we ask for and the help we receive could be a breakthrough for all involved.

The Susan B. Anthony was a coin issued to meet a specific currency need – a dollar currency more enduring than the paper dollar bill. Therefore, the coin was produced for that specific purpose. However, after the coin was released, it was poorly received by the American populace who did not widely accept and use the coin for a variety of reasons. Since no one would keep and spend them, getting them into the currency
circulation, they were cast aside. Throughout the history of coinage, there has never been a coin that was deemed worthless, whether because of misprinting, overprinting, double printing, or whatever, that did not become a collector’s item. The populace just did not appreciate its value at the time.
We suffering from addiction are frequently treated the same way, cast aside or discarded because no one else could see our value or sometimes had no use for us. Yet, the Susan B. Anthony dollar was always worth at least a dollar, no matter what. Its deeper value could not be appreciated at the time. All too often, our value cannot be seen because of the extraneous problems plaguing us from our addictions. Nevertheless, deep inside all of us is a valuable golden nugget whose shine is yet to be discovered. Our value lies in our sustained recovery, actually more valuable than gold, just waiting to pop forth and be shared. You are indeed a collector’s item, and remember, “Each day my value is greater.”
