Fairfax County Supervisor Walter Alcorn walking with the Shepherd Center's weekly walking club.

April 1, 2026

Fairfax County's Walk and Win Challenge begins today, April 1 — which also happens to be National Walking Day. The county’s month-long challenge is an invitation to get moving, enjoy the spring weather, improve your health, and win prizes along the way. Starting a regular walking routine could be the first step toward a healthier lifestyle.

Join the Walk & Win Challenge to live longer, plus win prizes.

One in four adults in the U.S. sit for more than eight hours a day, according to the CDC. Prolonged sitting raises your risk of heart disease, diabetes, weight gain, cancer, and even premature death.

However, the good news is walking is a great way to improve your health and lengthen your life. To achieve these benefits, you don’t need to walk 10,000 steps a day — which is a popular myth based on a 60s-era marketing campaign for a pedometer (although I admit to having used that metric myself in the past).

Just taking a brisk 11-minute walk every day can lower your risk of premature death by nearly 25%, according to one of the largest studies on physical activity that looked at data from 30 million people. This amount of daily exercise was also enough to cut the risk of heart disease by 17% and cancer by 7%.

Of course, walking’s health benefits are reward enough — but Fairfax County is sweetening the deal. Join the Walk and Win Challenge and you'll be eligible for weekly gift card and merchandise giveaways from local retailers and restaurants, including Caboose Brewing, The Bike Lane in Reston, and South Block.

It’s also a chance to make new friends. Consider joining a walking club to get your daily steps in while building new social connections.

There are many options like the Shepherd Center’s Walking Club which I took a stroll with last year (see photo above). They meet every Tuesday in Vienna; call Casey Tarr at 703-281-0538 to join them.

Or check out the Northern Virginia Volksmarchers. You may also join the Reston Community Center’s Walking Group or meet up with the Kilmanjaro/Reston Walking Group for their weekly four-mile lap around Lake Anne, followed by a social gathering.

Spring is here, and the trails are calling. Even a short daily walk could add years to your life. I hope to see you out there.

Regards,

Walter

Piney Run Tributary Restoration Project Starts This Month. Community Meetings on April 8 &11

Map showing the location for the Piney Run Tributary Restoration project.

What’s happening: Construction on the Piney Run Tributary restoration project is anticipated to begin this month, and the county will hold two “pardon our dust” community meetings:

  • Wednesday, April 8 from 6:30-7:30 pm: Join this virtual meeting on Microsoft Teams.
  • Saturday, April 11 from 1-3 pm: In-person meeting at the Pink Trail head on Center Harbor Road, Reston.

How does this impact me: While active construction is ongoing, the spur of the pathway that connects Center Harbor Road to the Pink Trail behind Bright Pond Lane will be closed. Signs will be posted.

Tell me more: The project will restore about 1,200-feet of the stream’s channel on Reston Association land between Woodbrook Lane and Center Harbor Road. The project is expected to take a year to complete. To prepare for construction, the county’s contractor, Environmental Quality Resources Inc., may be performing inspections and survey work on site this week.

For more information about this project, contact Charles Smith with Fairfax County’s Stormwater Planning Division by email or call him at (571) 407-6973. For any questions about Reston Association’s participation in this project, please email Ben Rhoades.

Celebrating Metrorail’s 50th Anniversary

Last week, I presented a proclamation to honor Metrorail’s 50th anniversary, alongside Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay and former Chairman Kate Hanley.

The rail system that’s so vital to our region first began service on March 27, 1976, carrying riders on the 4.6 miles of the Red Line between Rhode Island Avenue and Farragut North. Since then, customers have taken more than 7 billion trips on Metrorail, and more than 15 billion trips across Metrorail, Metrobus, and MetroAccess.
