Fairfax County Supervisor Walter Alcorn holding the International Dark Skies 2026 proclamation

April 15, 2026

Yesterday, the Board of Supervisors proclaimed April 13-20 as International Dark Sky Week in Fairfax County.

I sponsored this proclamation to raise awareness about the importance of preventing light pollution and preserving our dark skies.

The night sky belongs to everyone, and we can all help to protect it. This week is a perfect moment to pause, look up, and take simple steps that make a real difference — for birds and wildlife, for our own health, and for the generations who come after us.

Excessive nighttime lighting can affect our sleep, disrupting the production of melatonin the hormone that prepares your body to go to sleep.

Bright lights also disorient birds during their spring migration which lasts until May 31. An estimated 100 million birds migrate through Northern Virginia in the spring, and 80% of them travel at night, according to the Northern Virginia Bird Alliance. Nighttime lighting can lead them to fatally crash into windows.

During this week especially — as well as year-round — there are a few simple actions we can take to keep our skies dark:

  • Turn off unnecessary outdoor lights at night, particularly from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the spring and fall bird migration seasons, to help birds navigate safely. In Northern Virginia, the spring migration season lasts from March 15 to May 31, and the fall season runs from August 15 through November 15.
  • Dim lights visible through windows between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. during bird migration seasons.
  • Use responsible outdoor lighting practices at home — follow the Five Principals for Responsible Outdoor Lighting, including only using lighting if needed, using warmer colored lights, and putting lights on timers or motion sensors so they’re only on when necessary.

I also invite you to take a moment this week to look into the night sky and enjoy the stars and moon.

Regards,

Walter

Fairfax County Supervisor Walter Alcorn picking up trash during the Tysons Forest Cleanup

Thanks to the 60-plus volunteers who came out this past Sunday to help clean up Tysons Forest. We picked up dozens of bags of trash from this hidden natural area that is only steps from the Spring Hill Metro Station. It was wonderful to see both long-time residents who love these woods and those who discovered it for the first time.

I attended the celebratory open house for Blue Sky Innovators, Inc. This dual-use technology company will invest $7 million to grow its staff and expand its existing office space in Reston Town Center West. With the assistance from a state grant, the company’s expansion is expected to create 175 new jobs and build out an approximately 20,000-square foot, secure innovation and laboratory space above its office that’s called SkyLab. Congratulations to the Blue Sky Team!

Recognizing State Champions from South Lakes and Madison High Schools

Yesterday, the Board recognized Fairfax County Public School teams and individuals who won state championships during the 2026 winter sports season.

Once again, the South Lakes Seahawks dominated the track and field competitions in the Virginia High School League Class 6 championships.

Senior Alex Guthrie captured the sprint titles in the 55-meter dash (6.33 seconds) and 300-meter dash (34.03 seconds, a school record) and anchored the boys 4x200 relay team to seventh place. He also holds the fastest times in both the 55m and the 300m in school history.

Senior Blake Jackson secured the long jump title (23’ 5.5”), setting a South Lakes record. (He also placed second in the triple jump.)

For the fourth year in a row, the South Lakes High School girls team clinched the gold in the indoor track and field 4x800-meter relay (9:04.67 time). Senior and team anchor Caroline Elliott, freshman Quinn Jackson, junior Sarah Ghantiwala, and senior Aya Ryan ran to victory.

From Madison High School, Marleigh daSilva claimed the state title in Girls 1 Meter Dive for the third year in a row. She broke her own school record — and the Virginia girls 11-dive record. This competition demands 11 total dives of various difficulties covering all five diving groups (front, back, reverse, inward, and twister).

Congratulations to all these amazing student athletes!

Final design and color for Lake Anne signage

Near Final Design for New Lake Anne

Entrance Signs Presented

Illustration of Lake Anne entrance beacon signs

What’s happening: Inspired by mid-century design, two new colorful entrance signs to Lake Anne may guide visitors and shoppers to Reston’s first village center. County staff and design consultant Streetsense unveiled the near final design for the modular signs with playful colors that are planned to be posted in the median along Baron Cameron Avenue. This almost completed design builds upon community feedback from a February 17 public meeting.

Fairfax County will pay for creating, installing and maintaining the signs with existing revitalization funds.

Why it matters: The two “beacon signs” will help visitors find Lake Anne, a need identified by the county’s economic visioning study. (I initiated this study in 2023 to examine how to help revitalize Lake Anne.) The new signs mark the first step in implementing a broader wayfinding strategy for Lake Anne.

The new design also will be incorporated into an overall, proposed signage plan for this village center. It will provide the area’s private property owners with a roadmap for installing other visually cohesive wayfinding signs should they choose.

Next steps: Within the next week or so, the design team will finalize the design and sign specifications. This will allow the county to solicit bids for a company to make the signs and secure price estimates. Before the signs can be fabricated and installed, however, the county must get a land use permit from VDOT, a process that can take a number of months. In the meantime, the county is working with an engineering firm to plan and prepare for meeting VDOT’s requirements for installing signs in a public right-of-way.

Accessory Living Unit Community Meetings April 23 & 24

What’s happening: Participate in virtual community meetings on proposed zoning updates for accessory living units:

  • Thursday, April 23 at 7 p.m.: Join this Microsoft Teams Meeting. Or call in at 571-429-5982; Conference ID: 349 698 93#)
  • Friday, April 24 at noon: Join this Microsoft Teams Meeting, Or call in at 571-429-5982; Conference ID: 734 344 00#)

At these meetings, you’ll learn about:

  • Results from a recent community survey
  • Setback requirements
  • State legislative updates related to this type of housing
  • Next steps for consideration/discussion

Background: Proposed zoning changes by county staff are intended to reduce the difficulty and confusion for homeowners, provide additional housing options, and increase the overall housing supply.

Currently, ALUs are only allowed in conjunction with single family detached homes. They may be within a home’s interior — such as a basement or an addition — or they may be separate detached buildings. In 2021 ALUs got a lot of attention when zoning rules were relaxed to allow certain ALUs to be approved administratively without a public hearing, and since then only 12 have been approved in the Hunter Mill District.
