The Board of Supervisors met yesterday April 22. You can watch the meeting and review the agenda and package.
The budget public hearings began yesterday afternoon, and they continue today through Thursday. If you wish to testify but didn’t register, you’ll still have the opportunity to speak in-person or over the phone after the registered speakers on Thursday. You may also submit written testimony online.
Proclamation Honoring Vietnamese-Americans
I joined the Board in marking the 50th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon and honoring the tens of thousands of Vietnamese Americans who call Fairfax County home. As pictured above, I stood alongside members of the Vietnamese community, including Uyen Dinh and fellow Restonians BeBe Nguyen, executive director of the Reston Community Center, and Rosemary Tran Lauer, founder of the nonprofit Devotion to Children. These accomplished women exemplify the extraordinary contributions Vietnamese-Americans continue to make to our community.
Fairfax Connector Route Changes
The Board approved changes to Fairfax Connector routes for this spring and summer. In the Hunter Mill District, the following changes were made:
-
Route 598 will offer more frequent service during peak hours, running every 15-30 minutes instead of the previous 20-30 minutes. (This route travels between the Reston South Park-and-Ride to the Pentagon/Crystal City, and stops at the Reston North Park-and-Ride.)
-
Route 599: This route will be eliminated since it duplicates service provided by Route 598.
-
Routes 605 and 615 will increase their frequencies by five minutes during peak hours to improve service reliability. Both routes will offer service every 30-35 minutes rather than the previous 30-40 minutes. These routes travel between Reston and Fair Oaks and Fair Oaks and Greenbriar.
Transportation Funding Updates: Soapstone Connector and Fox Mill Road Intersection Improvements
The Board approved funding for two transportation projects in the Hunter Mill District.
We approved accepting $1.2 million in federal funding to improve the intersection at Fox Mill Road and Pinecrest Road. This project includes adding curb and gutter to the areas where they don’t exist, reconfiguring lanes and adding crosswalks to this intersection.
The board also approved a $19.1 million cost increase for the Soapstone Connector. Now totaling an estimated $235 million, the project’s cost increased due to the rising expense for utility relocations, unit costs and adjustments to contingency and inflation costs. State, regional and federal dollars will pay for the majority of this project while the county will contribute $99.4 million.
This project will extend Soapstone Drive by about half a mile from Sunrise Valley Drive to Sunset Hills Road via a new bridge over the Dulles Toll Road.
I’m working with VDOT on the project’s design details to minimize the impact on nearby residents and to make sure this project maximizes safe pedestrian and bicycle access
