January 22, 2025

Neighbors,

Do you have questions, issues or concerns you want to discuss with me? Let’s talk!

Come to my Winter Town Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at the North County Governmental Center,1801 Cameron Glen Drive, Reston. Light refreshments will be served.

If you have questions in advance, you’re welcome to submit them by email with the subject line "town hall.”

This is an open forum that I hold quarterly, and there are lots of ongoing issues to discuss. This includes state legislation to authorize a casino in Tysons (a terrible idea that I oppose!), the redevelopment of the Crescent Apartments and much more. In the future, I also hope to focus some of these town halls on specific topics like transportation.

Of course, I’ll be holding additional, separate town halls in the spring on the county’s budget, so please stay tuned for more details.

For more information, questions or reasonable ADA accommodations, contact my office by email or call 703-478-0283, TTY 711. See you Feb. 5.

Regards,

Walter

Walter making sandwiches at the 2025 MLK event at Cathy Hudgins Community Center

In the Community

It was a pleasure to join all the volunteers who participated in community service projects at the Cathy Hudgins Community Center this past Saturday. To commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we made sandwiches for people who are homeless and sorted toys that the nonprofit The Closet of Greater Herndon will donate.

I want to extend a big thanks to Reston Association for organizing this annual event for the past 40 years, along with the Friends of the Cathy Hudgins Community Center and Reston Community Center.

There’s nothing more Reston than giving back!

Traffic Alert: Avoid I-495 Northbound

on Jan. 24-27

VDOT is warning drivers to avoid I-495 northbound near Tysons (heading towards the American Legion Bridge) during Jan. 24-27. Branded as “Big Beam Weekend,” VDOT will install steel girders over the Capital Beltway, and lanes on the Beltway will be reduced between Route 7 (near mile marker 47.4) to north of the Dulles Toll Road/Route 267 (near mile marker 44.6). Multiple ramps at the I-495 and Dulles Corridor interchange will be closed and detoured. Expect major traffic impacts, so be forewarned.

Fairfax library access services home delivery

Fairfax County Library Access Services

Did you know the Fairfax County Library offers access services to residents who either cannot physically visit the library or cannot read a book due to a disability. Two primary services are available:

Talking Book Service: This is for people who are unable to read or use standard print materials due to permanent or temporary blindness, visual impairment or physical limitations. Staff will mail you digital audiobooks and magazines, as well as Braille materials. This service is offered through an affiliation with the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled, a division of the Library of Congress. If you use a mobile device, try the free BARD Mobile app to access digital audiobooks too.

Home Delivery Service: The Fairfax County Library will mail you materials they own. To qualify, you must have a permanent or temporary disability or physical limitation that prevents you from visiting a local branch. If you prefer to read eBooks or listen to eAudiobooks, you can still qualify for a library card through the Home Delivery service and access the Libby app.

For more information about Access Services, contact them at 703-324-8380 or by email.
