To My Hunter Mill District Neighbors:
The silver lining for me during this awful pandemic has been to see the tremendous community spirit in the Hunter Mill District. In this newsletter, I have highlighted great examples including our healthcare workers, public safety officials, nonprofits and residents.
This week I had the privilege to meet representatives of Reston-based
Nova Labs
,
an all-volunteer makerspace, founded in 2011. They have been working on a
PPE Challenge
to make and donate personal protective equipment to organizations and facilities across the region. Yesterday, May 12, they dropped off the first 400 of 1,500 face shields at the Fairfax County Government Center for our front-line county employees at several locations. Thank you Nova Labs! This type of innovation and community spirit will help us get through this pandemic as safely and quickly as possible.

Governor Extends Public Health Restrictions in Fairfax County and Northern Virginia Until May 29

Fairfax County is making approximately $2.5 million in supplemental Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to eligible affordable housing providers in need of financial assistance due to the unexpected loss of rental income during the pandemic.

Construction of New Lake Anne Senior Housing Project Set to Begin Soon
The development of the long-awaited senior housing project in Reston is scheduled to begin in coming weeks. This privately owned and operated development will replace the aging Lake Anne Fellowship House with 240 units of affordable senior living and a 36-unit multi-family townhome community on the site of the current facility. The project has received over 100 Project-Based Vouchers and a
$3 million Housing Blueprint loan
from Fairfax County through the Redevelopment and Housing Authority.
The Lake Anne Fellowship House was developed in the early 1970’s and has provided a quality living experience for very-low income older adults in the Reston area. I am very excited that work on this long-awaited project will begin soon. The Fellowship House has been home for many low-income seniors over the past five decades, allowing them to age in place near the cultural and historical center of our Reston community. The New Lake Anne House will continue that tradition with essential upgrades in accessibility features and available programs and services that enable residents to take full advantage of the benefits and opportunities life in Fairfax County affords.

The next Transportation Advisory Council (TAC) meeting is scheduled for May 27 from 8 to 10 a.m. The meeting will be on a virtual platform and more information on the platform is forthcoming

Metrorail Orange and Silver Lines Stations in Fairfax County to Close for Expanded Construction Activities Beginning May 23
- All stations west of Ballston Metrorail Station on the Orange and Silver Lines will be closed beginning Saturday, May 23. The stations to be closed are:
- Orange Line - East Falls Church, West Falls Church, Dunn Loring, Vienna
- Silver Line - McLean, Tysons Corner, Greensboro, Spring Hill, Wiehle-Reston East
- All Orange Line trains will begin and end service at Ballston. Service will operate from Ballston to New Carrollton.
- There will be no Silver Line service for the duration of the station closures.
I-66 Bridge Reconstruction To Close Cedar Lane Beginning Around May 15
As part of VDOT’s Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project, Cedar Lane will be closed between Cottage Street and Hilltop Road for a six-month period beginning around May 15 in order to reconstruct the bridge over I-66.

Volunteer Service Award Community Champion
|

William “Bill” Farrell
has been selected as the 2020 Fairfax County Volunteer Service Award Community Champion representing the Hunter Mill District.
Each year, the
Board of Supervisors selects an individual to be recognized for their commitment to promoting volunteerism within their community while addressing specific needs.
For the past five years, Bill has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Shepherd’s Center. As Board Chair and Vice-Chair of the Advisory Committee, Bill is ever-present as the face of the organization. He drives clients to medical appointments, meets with community leaders, folds newsletters, serves food at the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, and organizes fundraising events. Thank you for your service and congratulations Bill!

Fairfax County Public Library
(FCPL) facilities remain closed until further notice. Here are some important dates and information about library services for you to know:
- Overdue fines are suspended and due dates for all physical materials will continue to be extended to ensure that no late fees accrue while library branches are closed. Please help us by keeping your materials while the library is closed.
- All in-person, library-sponsored programs are cancelled through Sept. 7. However, you can enjoy digital programs for all ages.
- Summer Reading will take place June 12-Aug. 14, and the theme is “Imagine Your Story.” This year, it will be a virtual program for children and adults. More information will be available on the library’s website in early June.
- All meeting room reservations are cancelled through June 30.
- Hold pick-up dates will be extended while the library is closed.
- No new interlibrary loan requests will be processed; current interlibrary loan requests will remain in production.
- No donated materials will be accepted while the library is closed.
- Wi-Fi can be accessed 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily in Fairfax County Public Library branch parking lots.
- Ask Your Library online chat service is available to customers Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Customers may submit emails at any time when the service is offline.
