As we were ending the second nine-weeks and first semester of school, we had two busy weeks of wonderful Winter Concerts as well as multiple holiday celebrations.

Our amazing Performing Arts teachers and students spread season cheer within our school and community through the phenomenal performances featured below. We all enjoyed, hot cocoa, pancakes, and holiday cookies and celebration time throughout the last week of school. Our generous PTSA also hosted a delicious and festive holiday lunch for HCMS faculty and staff. We are so grateful to have such a wonderful supportive PTSA Board.

HCMS had the opportunity to host all Innovation Schools' principals for the holiday gathering. Everyone had a fun time and HCMS showcased some of our multi-talented Eagles. We believe that each one of our Eagles and Eagle teachers has special talents to showcase. Please see photos and read information below.

As we say goodbye to 2019, we are reflecting on the terrific accomplishments of this year and setting our goals for 2020. Our Eagles recently received recognition in various competitions and programs (STEM Competition, Global Peace Art & Film Festival Calendar, and Magnet Poster Contest). They have also successfully completed their Common Final Exams, and Progress Monitoring and i-Ready Assessments.

There is more work to do... As our students enjoy their time during this holiday break, two weeks are long enough for some down time. Please remember to encourage your students to rise up to the challenge! Our HCMS Winter Reading challenges and Winter i-Ready Math challenge will earn our students and may earn our school prizes. What a great way to reinforce the literacy and math skills and receive rewards!

I am hoping to see everyone at the Miami Heat vs. Orlando Magic Game on February 1st, 2020. Come out and support the HCMS Chorus Notables and Cheerleaders Eaglets teams as they perform at the game.

Also, don't forget to watch the HCMS Guitar & Orchestra Students perform on Channel 6 WKMG on Wednesday, December 25th.

In closing, our Eagle Family is eagerly looking forward to the next semester... We will be sharing with you then some amazing news about our school. Stay tuned!

Wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday season, and a happy new year filled with prosperity and success!

Students of the Week
Congratulations to our 6th graders of the week (12/2-12/6)!!!

Mariana Mendez: I nominate Mariana Mendez for Soaring to Greatness. Mariana is a mature and hardworking 6th grade student. Throughout the school year, she continues to set high expectations for herself and continues to strive for and meet those expectations every single day. She always gives her full effort in all she does. On top of that, she has already read 8 books this school year, and that number is still growing! Not only is she a great student, Mariana is a sweet, respectful, and caring person. She's an absolute pleasure to teach and the perfect candidate for Student of the Week.

Amanda Ribeiro Marques: Amanda is awesome. She is always prepared to learn and contribute to class discussions.

Students of the Week (Part 2)

Brooke Ashcraft: Brooke an amazing student assistant. She is always willing to do whatever is asked of her and stays on task. She is very helpful and comes in smiling with a good attitude every day!

I sabella Gaidarji da Silva: Isabella has shown all of the traits that HCMS Eagles need to soar to greatness! She always tries her best to complete assignments and get work done, she is respectful and kind to everyone around her, and she is a leader during class discussions and group activities. It has been wonderful to get to know her and be able to have her as a student this year!

Because I love reading and exploring all the characters and their lives and it just took me to another world.
5. What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?
Spend time with family and we do a lot of outdoor activities and just being mom.

HCMS: A Forever Home
A new feature in the newsletter for the next few months is a focus on past HCMS students who have returned to be an employee at the school.

Today's featured Forever Eagle is Dominic Golia.

Sixth grade vs. today

1. When were you a student at HCMS? Are any of your teachers still here and what is your favorite memory from your time here?
I was a 6th grader in 1997, and a few staff members were here then and still are: Coach Friday, Mr. Emmanuelli, Ms. Vazquez, Ms. Parra, and even Ms. Heinl's dad and Ms. Nicosia's dad. My favorite memory was  performing in the HCMS fine/performing arts.
2. Why did you decide to become an educator?
I'm passionate about helping students reach their potential.
3. What has it been like coming back to your middle school as an educator?
It's been wonderful. All of the years that HCMS staff poured into my life, and now I get to pour into the lives of the next generation of HCMS Eagles is a wonderful and humbling experience.

STEM Competition

We'd love to shine a spotlight to some amazing students who have taken their own time both inside and outside of school to participate in the County-Wide SECME & SSS Competition. These students worked through their lunch breaks, after school, and at home to produce winning results! We competed against 50 other OCPS schools and over 700 students competed in the entire competition and we came home with two trophies:

* Smit Gupta, Youssab Mena, & Jose Baez Irragory placed 2nd in the Middle School Category for VEX Robotics!

* Raida Nowreen won first place in the STEM Champions Poster Competition!

We also participated in the Egg Drop Challenge where students had to create a vessel to be dropped from a two-story and a three-story landing under very demanding specifications.
Those students were:
* Abigail Cramer
* Rachael Cunha
* Isabell Lugo
* Liam Sullivan
* Jose Baez Irragory
* Youssab Mena
* Jackson Cooke

And last but not least, where would they be without the support of others who would step in and help, or substitute in at the last moment.

* Nikita Kalyuzhnyy

Congratulations to Ms. Whitmore and all of our amazing students who took part in SECME & SSS!

Magnet Poster Contest
Congratulations to Amy Gomez for being chosen as the district's top poster for the National Magnet School Student Poster Contest. Amy will now be moving onto the National competition representing all of Orange County!

Magnet Schools of America (MSA) designates February 2020 as an opportunity to highlight and promote magnet schools across the country. To help celebrate, Magnet Schools of America is sponsoring its 14th Annual National Magnet Schools Student Poster Contest.

Students have the option to express/interpret just one of MSA's pillars OR all five of MSA's pillars: Diversity, Innovative Curriculum and Professional Development, Academic Excellence, High Quality Instructional Systems, & Family and Community Partnerships.

Good luck to Amy as her poster moves on!
Winter Band Concert
To say that the Winter Band Concert was amazing is an understatement! Our band students skillfully played holiday music under the direction of our amazing Ms. Berry. Our gym was packed with hundreds of parents and community members whose cheers were ongoing in appreciation to the sounds of the wonderful music that our young Eagle musicians were playing.

Guitar Concert

The guitar students, under the lead of Mrs. Sell, showcased their incredible talents by playing a great selection of music which included sounds of the season.

It was extremely impressive to see Mrs. Sell's ability to bring the musical talent out of the students (especially our beginning guitar students) and with the beautiful music that our Eagles played. Bravo HCMS Guitar classes!

We'd also like to highlight Melissa Crespilho who wrote an original song titled "Where the Flowers Bloom" and performed it at the concert. What an impressive feat from a very talented young guitarist!

Orchestra Concert

Congratulations to Mrs. Bichler's Orchestra students who all did a wonderful job at their Winter Concert. The Symphonia, Beginning, and Chamber Orchestras beautifully performed holiday songs from around the world. Thank you also to Mrs. Sell and Ms. Berry for supporting the Orchestra program in preparation and during the concert.

Winter Piano Recitals

Bravo to Ms. Sell's and Ms. Bichler's piano students on their Winter Recital. Students' talents shone through as they each shared their mastered piece with the audience over three days in our cafetorium. Congratulations to all!

Shusterman Beanstack Reading Challenge

To prepare for Neal Shusterman's visit later this school year (tentatively scheduled for March 5th), HCMS is challenging students to read as much Neal Shusterman during winter break and January as they can!

To take part in the challenge, students ( starting December 21st) will be able to log minutes through Beanstack for any minutes they spend reading Neal Shusterman titles. Prizes will be given out to winning participants!

P.S. No need to backlog any Shusterman reading - this is specifically a challenge for these dates in hopes of increasing the amount of his books read. As long as RC tests were taken for past Shusterman reading, those books will count when determining who is invited to the Author Lunch when he visits.

To access Beanstack, log into Launch Pad, search Beanstack, and open the program.
Winter Reading Challenge
January 1-31, 2020

And even if you are not reading a Neal Shusterman book, we are excited to share a Winter Reading Challenge. From January 1st to January 31st, OCPS & Hunter's Creek Middle School will participate in Beanstack's Third Annual Winter Reading Challenge, sponsored by Penguin Random House (PRH). We challenge our patrons/students to read as much as possible during the month and keep track of their reading on our Beanstack app through Launchpad. Hundreds of libraries and schools across the nation will encourage their communities to read a target number of minutes and books.

Top-performing libraries and schools will earn the Golden Penguin and Random House awards. PRH pledges to donate $50,000 in prizes, including author visits and new books, to be shared among the winners. Let's light up the mind this winter!

Happy reading, Hunter's Creek!
