Hunter's Creek Middle School Community Brief

Monday, August 22, 2022

Dear Mark,

Thank you for an incredible first one and a half weeks of school. I am grateful to our extremely dedicated teachers and staff and to our amazing parents and students for making the start of this school year a smooth and successful one. Our Eagles and Eagle parents have already learned a lot about the academic expectations, rules and procedures to follow at HCMS.

Parents! Please be patient and follow our safety traffic rules. Students can be dropped off between 8:30 and 9:15 in the morning and can be picked up between 4:00 and 4:30 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; or between 3:00 and 3:30pm on Wednesdays. Please remember that only a right turn is allowed when you exit the school to Town Loop Blvd. Thank you for keeping everyone safe.

We had our first SAC meeting for the year on Monday, 8/15, at 5:00 pm in the Media Center. We were glad to see that more parents are joining us. Our next combined SAC and MPLC (Multilingual Parent Leadership Council) meeting is scheduled for Monday, 9/ 12, at 5:00 pm in the Media Center. Don’t miss out on very important information. Join us!

I am very excited to share with you our new Houses System which is specifically designed to promote cultural and social awareness as well as increase the students’ engagement and sense of belonging. Read more details below.

We have also included in this edition essential beginning of the school year parent information in order to make it easy for you to access through one document. I ask that you read every section in its entirety.

Thank you for your continued support!

Joumana Moukaddam, Principal

Welcome New Eagle Faculty & Staff Members!

Meet Mr. Onderick, Language Arts

I was born and raised right here in Orlando, Florida! When I’m not in school, you can usually find me outdoors somewhere kayaking or hiking. I also love both watching and playing sports. Pick a sport, any sport.

I attended Holy Family Catholic School and Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando! After graduating from Dr. Phillips, I attended Florida State University and graduated with a bachelor’s in English.

Since then, I was the Marketing Manager for Dave and Buster’s on International Drive for 6 years. COVID thought tourism marketing was a bad career choice for me, and really had me reconsider my options. I wanted to do something that would make a difference. I wanted to change lives. I am now proud to say I am an English Language Arts teacher at Hunter’s Creek Middle.

I recently moved into Hunter’s Creek this past year, and immediately looked for the best schools in the area. Hunter's Creek Middle consistently earned “A” grades each year, and was also a large factor in why we moved to Hunter's Creek. I wanted to be a part of something special, and I know I found it here.

Meet Ms. Nunez, Science

Meet Ms. McGregor, Reading

I am from Austin, Texas. I graduated from Texas A & M University with a B.S. in Curriculum and Instruction. I have a double major in Reading and English as well. I have a bit of Grad School under my belt, from Texas Woman's University.

I have lived in Florida for about 4 years now.

Most of my experience is from Texas where I taught for over 30 years. Primarily my experience is in elementary and special education, but I also have secondary experience in 6-9th grade.

I also was in the business world for a while to try something new, in the healthcare field.

I am excited to be teaching in such a wonderful school this year.

I have one son who is a musician in New York, he is also a producer and has played guitar since he was nine years old. Currently he is touring with a band all over the United States. He has played at Austin City Limits and at the Ryman Theatre in Nashville. He will return to New York in September and continue his work on producing music. I also have three bonus children that live in Orlando and are adults as well, each following their passions and interests.

I advocate for Parkinson's Disease through the Michael J. Fox Foundation and I have been to Washington, D.C. to speak with senators on Capitol Hill.

Meet Ms. Gregory, ESE Co-Teacher & Learning Strategies

Meet Ms. Camacho, SAFE Coordinator

I am from Colombia and I came to the USA in 2000.

My bachelor's degree is in psychology, and I have a Master's Degree in Counseling with an emphasis on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

I've worked as a Targeted Case Manager, Behavior Analyst, and this is my second year as a Safe Coordinator- Mental Health Designee. I am thrilled to be a part of the HCMS family and to be able to help students with their mental health and social/emotional needs.

Meet Ms. Toledo, ESOL Developmental Language Arts & English Language Arts

Meet Ms. Burgess, Mathematics

Meet Ms. Jarque, Science

Hola, HCMS families! My name is Dashelyn Jarque, and I was born and raised in Venezuela but moved to the U.S. in 2002. I graduated from UCF with a Bachelor's in Biology and a Master's in Arts of Teaching. I also have a Master's in Applied Clinical Nutrition from the Northeastern University. I have a beautiful daughter, and we love going to Disney on our days off.

I am excited to be a part of the Eagle community as a teacher and the NJHS advisor.

Parent/Guardian Tech Tip!

IMPORTANT HINT:

During the school year, make sure you utilize Canvas as a great information resource!

During the school year, a Weekly Update is sent as a Global Announcement to each student and observer dashboard each week. This weekly update has the most up-to-date information!

Canvas is also like your student’s binder: You can find messages from teachers, assignments, grades, important information, and more there!

It is critical that families support students by monitoring their progress each week. The best place to do this is in Skyward Family Access. This is the official grade book in Orange County Public Schools. Once inside, pay attention to the number of missing assignments. If these are not submitted it can result in a lower overall grade.

Take Action:

• Set a digital reminder for you and your child to review grades each week.

• Login to the OCPS Parent Portal, enter Skyward Family Access and check the grade book. Watch this short video to learn how.

• Identify missing assignments in the Skyward Grade book. This quick video tip will show you how

• Don't wait for surprises! Set alerts in Canvas Parent to monitor day-to-day progress. This video will show you how on a mobile device. Use this video if using a laptop/desktop computer.

• If you cannot login to the OCPS Parent Portal and enter Skyward Family Access, please submit an OCPS Parent Portal Concerns Form
