I hope that this newsletter finds you safe and healthy.

School is not the same! We miss our students, teachers, staff members and parents. But we will do school differently and stay consistently in touch thanks to our advanced technology tools.

Parents! If you need to visit HCMS for any reason, please call the school at 407-858-4620 to schedule an appointment. We are committed to you and your students.

By now, I am sure that your child's teacher or teachers have made contact with you. If not, please email the teacher to make sure they have your current contact information. Teacher email addresses are on each school's website under "faculty and staff." Distance Learning for all students begins Monday, March 30.

HCMS teachers and staff have been working rigorously long hours to provide our eagles with standards based lessons and activities that capture the students' interest, motivate them and engage them in active and interactive learning.

We have all embarked on a new way of teaching and learning. Our soaring Eagle teachers and staff  have quickly embraced these new changes, became more creative in using the technology tools and strongly cemented a relentless common purpose to make sure that every student receives the academic and emotional support needed within these difficult times with the outbreak of COVID-19. As the teachers are working from home, they are ready to help our Eagles as much as possible
(Please see information below).

I have no doubt that with the support of our parents, the distance learning will be successful. The students will make academic progress as they have within the past three-nine weeks.
Remember that this is temporary and we will hopefully see our students back to school in no time.

Stay Safe!

Upcoming Important Dates
March 30th to April 15th: Digital/Distance Learning

March 30th: Parents/guardians may access report cards by going to "Student Portfolio" on Skyward Family Access. If you need assistance in navigating Skyward, please review the documentation link from OCPS.  If you would like a printed copy, please just contact HCMS, and we can print and mail a copy.

Sadly, Gradventure for this school year is cancelled.
Following the recommendations of the CDC and the Florida Department of Health about social gatherings, the district made the difficult decision to cancel many events including cancelling the 8th grade Gradventure field trip.  Please know that refunds will be processed for tickets purchased for the events. Tickets purchased with SchoolPay will be refunded electronically to your original payment method as soon as possible.

All State Testing is Cancelled
Governor Ron DeSantis has declared that all required testing for Florida's K-12 schools is cancelled. Students will not be taking FSA, EOC, FCAT 2.0, NGSSS, or CFE assessments this school year. Requirements for grade promotion and final course grades will be determined as if the state assessments did not exist.

Please follow HCMS's social media for up to date information about upcoming events as things are changing almost daily.

February Teacher of the Month
Congratulations to our February Teacher of the Month: Coach Manfria, PE teacher!

Some kind words said about Coach Manfria:

~ "Because she explains very well and is very patient. She is also super sweet and treats us all very well like all teachers should be."

~ "SHE is the best teacher I have."

~ "She is caring and helps everyone succeed... That is why everyone loves her."

~ "I am nominating Coach Manfria because she is so nice and loving. She always makes me feel special in class and makes me excited to come to her class everyday!"

February Support Person of the Month
Congratulations to our February Support Person of the Month: Ms. Britos, ESOL Portuguese paraprofessional!
Some kind words said about Ms. Britos:

~ "She is extremely helpful, funny, supportive, and can always put a smile on your face. Ms. Britos is THE BEST!"

~ "Ela e uma rainha. Todo mundo ama ela. Ela e a melhor do universo que nos conheceremos... Te amamos!

~ "Because I have her in one class, and she really works hard with the ESOL students to make them be better at English and she have helped me a lot."

Week of 3/2 Students of the Week
Congratulations to our 8th grade students of the week for the week of 3/2-3/6/2020 (with a three way tie!): Waqas Khan, Violet Escalona, and Zachary Langlois!
Waqas Khan is nominated for student of the month for respect. He is such a kind and well-manned young man. Every morning he makes sure to greet me at the door and I appreciate that greatly, as many students don't often do that these days. He is kind to his peers and always does what he needs with full understanding and cooperation. Way to go, Waqas!

Mrs. Pratt would like to recognize Violet for her abundance of hard work this quarter. She has steadily been increasing and rocked the Transformations test. I am so proud of her effort and accomplishments! (Not pictured: Eggbert is displaying her certificate above!)

Zack is an asset to not only our yearbook class, volunteering to do the hard work, take any photos needed, and putting his ALL into everything we ask of him, but he is also an asset as a student assistant in 5th period helping run the library while multitasking with yearbook work. On top of all of this, Zack is a kind person who is trustworthy and just all around good!

Distance Learning!

OCPS Distance Learning will begin on March 30th. By now, your student's teachers should have contacted you or your student with the plan, but overall at HCMS this distance learning will be digital learning using Canvas.

Please make sure you (parents/guardians) are accessing Canvas as well to keep up with your student's work. To log into Canvas, sign into Classlink and find the Canvas icon. Still need help logging onto Canvas? Visit our Parents/Guardian page on our website for a link to a helpful document.

Once on Canvas, the dashboard shows all of your student's classes that you can access.

The INBOX is a messaging center for teachers to contact parents/guardians and students and vice versa--this is going to be an essential tool during this time.

One aspect of Canvas that will be utilized more during this time is the virtual conferences. These will be accessed by going into the Canvas Course and choosing Conferences on the side menu or through an icon on the home page

If you are struggling to determine the work for your student, please do not hesitate to reach out to the teacher via email or Canvas inbox.

Office Hours

During office hours, teachers will be online to help students in any way, either via messaging using Canvas Inbox, email, or a virtual conference. This will look different for each teacher.

March's Beanstack Challenge

Use Beanstack, accessible through Launchpad, to log books read in March to participate in our March Madness Reading Challenge (ends 3/31) and the district's Spring Into Reading challenge (starts 3/30)!

Students do need to register for these challenges for your logging to count!

Information on how to access and use Beanstack:

(to access, students must be logged in under their Google account)

Low and No Cost Internet Service Providers
The district currently supports relationships with Spectrum, Comcast and other internet providers who provided internet access at $14.95 per month to families who qualify for the National Free and Reduced Lunch Program. During a school closure we will continue to leverage these partnerships and work to ensure local cable providers open access to the internet at no charge to students.

The following local Internet Service Providers have taken the Keep America Connected Pledge and are offering low and no cost services at this time:
Free Grab-and-Go Meals

Closing Images for the Week . . .
What is it like for our Eagles' teachers to teach from home? Distance learning begins this Monday until classes resume later in April.

Some have smaller co-workers that go to work with them every day . . .

. . . while others are around teens at home!

Some teachers have furry co-workers that "help them" with work . . .
. . . and others just have critters walking or flying around.

Closing images for the week (Part II) . . .

There have been a lot of virtual meet ups online this past week!
We want our Eagles to know that no matter the situation, everyone has been working hard and that we are there for them. Our students will do just fine with distance learning until we see them again back on campus. Have a great week!
