Our whole team at HCMS would like to thank you for attending our school Open House. We enjoyed meeting all our parents, family members and children. We appreciate having the opportunity to share the active learning that goes on in our classrooms at Hunter's Creek Middle School. We are looking forward to a continued productive partnership with our community to ensure that our Eagles reach their highest potential.

The end of the first grading period is quickly approaching. Please monitor your student's progress closely within the next three weeks as the first quarter draws to a close. We want each of our students to earn the grades they are capable of achieving.

The quarterly PMA assessments have started. Students will be assessed in 8th Grade Science, Civics, Algebra and Geometry. These assessments serve as progress monitoring tools for your students achievement in the tested subjects during the May FSA Testing Administration. Please remind your students to prepare well and follow directions to achieve their greatest success.

Hunter's Creek Middle School offers tutoring for our students as well Amnesty Saturdays to provide additional academic support. Please encourage your student to take advantage of these opportunities when needed.

Thank you for everything you do to make HCMS such an outstanding school.

September's Eagles of the Month!
Sofia Andrade, Rodolfo Guerra, and Conner Saint Paul

8th Grade - Sofia Andrade
Sofia has started the year with excellent quiz and test scores! In addition to performing well in class, she is a great student leader with her group. She asks great questions and motivates her table to be the best in the room. She has been a pleasure to teach!

Please congratulate these three students for winning the September HCMS Eagle of the Month award for their grade levels!
7th Grade - Rodolfo Guerra
Rodolfo is a fantastic student and great person. He is a hard worker, responsible, and polite. He shows a lot of qualities that will ensure continued and future success!

6th Grade - Connor Saint Paul
Connor Saint Paul is nominated for "Soaring to Greatness." Math may not have always been his best subject in elementary school, but it's definitely proven to be one of his greatest achievements so far in middle school. Connor completes all of his work on time and has earned A's on his first two math assessments this school year. I am very proud of Connor's great work ethic and success!

Meet Eggbert!

Eggbert, the HCMS Mascot, made an egg-celent return to his Eagle's Nest at the 2019 Open House! Watch for EggBert throughout the year when we celebrate our Eagles!

Thank You for a Successful Open House!

We could not be the 'A' school we are without the support of our parents! Turn out at both Open Houses was stellar!

** If you missed Open House, please feel free to reach out to your child's teachers for the information shared.

Start With Hello Week

During the week of September 23rd-27th, the Sandy Hook Promise asked us to "Start with Hello." The initiative of this week is to help reduce social isolation which may result in violence or self-harm. It is all about school community, including others, and making others feel heard/loved/important.

Our week of kindness, inclusion, and community went so well with hundreds of nice notes being sent to students throughout the school and with kindness being spread in so many ways. We ended the week with "Wear Green" to show unity in the mission of Start with Hello Week.

Our HCMS Student Literacy Leaders organized and took charge of this week, and we cannot thank them enough for the hard work they put in!

Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month! Hunter's Creek Middle School is participating by showcasing artwork in the library created by students celebrating Hispanic Heritage and with a flag matching bulletin board in the library.

Teacher Features!
Interviews conducted by HCMS student Aneesah Fareeduddin

Student Literacy Leader and Yearbook Co-Editor, Aneesah Fareeduddin, hosts our Teacher Features for this issue with her interviews with Ms. Whitmore, our Project Lead the Way teacher, and Ms. Moye, our teacher-librarian.

Meet Ms. Whitmore
Ms. Whitmore & Aneesah
Aneesah: What did you want to be when you were little and why?
Ms. Whitmore: I wanted to be an astronaut because space has always been a love
of mine, and the only place I really want to visit.

Aneesah: What made you want to become a teacher?
Ms. Whitmore: My love for sharing what I know with others, and I had plenty of amazing teachers that made teaching look fun.

Aneesah: What has been the most rewarding thing for you as a teacher?
Ms. Whitmore: Having a student in my class that had been a former student of mine who got a call that he received a paid internship with Lockheed Martin.

Aneesah: What is the most difficult thing about being a teacher?
Ms. Whitmore: Feeling like I do not have enough time with each and every one of my students.

Aneesah: What's your favorite thing to do for fun?
Ms. Whitmore. I am part of SCA (The Society of Creative Anachronism), and my favorite things to do in the society are costuming, embroidery, and archery.

Meet Mrs. Moye
Ms. Moye & Aneesah
Aneesah: How do you feel about getting the new job as the librarian?
Ms. Moye: I am so excited to be the librarian this year! Other than teaching and my family, books are my favorite thing in the world, so I am so happy to be spreading the love of books and literacy.

Aneesah: Do you miss anything about being a teacher?
Ms. Moye: I am still a teacher :) just for everyone and in the library. It is hard working with all the students in the school, so it is harder to get to know everyone on a deeper level (and learn all names!), but I think I am lucky to be able to work with all teachers and students.

Aneesah: How does it feel to have your son, Trent, start Kindergarten?
Ms. Moye: I cannot believe he is so grown up, and it gives me a new outlook on being a parent looking in. Gives insight into a parent's point of view.

Aneesah: What do you like to do for fun?
Ms. Moye: This one is easy to answer! I love hanging out at home with my family, reading as much as I can, or going to Disney - those are my happy things.

Classroom Spotlights

History with Mr. Solomons
We love the focus on cognates in Mr. Solomons' history class! What a way to focus on supporting emergent bilinguals!

Math and "Student Voice" with Ms. Pratt
Ms. Pratt promotes learning from the classroom door with flashcards focusing on basic math skills. She also focuses on student voice by including a "student advice" bulletin board written by previous students on how to be successful in middle school classes.

WANTED: VOLUNTEERS!
Please consider becoming an ADDitions volunteer at HCMS . . .

School volunteers are extra-special people who are committed to making schools the best they can be. They offer special attention and caring that can inspire students to reach for and realize their dreams.

This program is a component of the ADDitions program. School volunteers work at the schools of their choice and participate in activities that match their interests, such as assisting teachers in the classroom, designing bulletin boards, working with students, serving as computer tutors, working with art classes, or helping out in the office or media center.

Every school in the county needs volunteers. From elementary to high schools to alternative and exceptional education centers, educators value the time and special talents of volunteers, and welcome them into the classroom.

Be a volunteer here at HCMS and help make our students' dreams come true!
