Orchestra at The National American String Teachers Association Convention

The Hunter’s Creek Chamber Orchestra was asked to be a demonstration group for The National American String Teachers Association Convention. This is a true honor for them and our school. They have also been selected to perform for this group a small concert. They are working hard, and are “giving up” their Spring Break for this opportunity to work with and learn from the top performers and educators in the field, who all will be in Orlando.

This group will be learning and showcasing alternative styles of playing. They started yesterday with a Zoom meeting with Dr. David Wallace, from Berklee School of Music in California, learning about improvising where he managed to convince every student to attempt an improv. Solo. They did great! That was just a warm up to what they will be experiencing next Friday at the convention center.

Tdap Immunization Event at Hunter’s Creek Middle School – Thursday, 4/6/23

The state of Florida requires students to have all of their required immunizations before school starts which includes children entering kindergarten or the required update before a child enters 7th grade. Eleven-year-olds are eligible for the Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis immunization also known as Tdap. This is a required shot before entering 7th grade.

There is a FREE immunization event happening here at Hunter’s Creek Middle School on the morning of Thursday, 4/6/23. Please check backpacks on 3/24/23 for the required pink consent forms to be filled out and returned to school (please give forms to Science Teachers or place them in the wire basket at the Front Desk) no later than 4/4/23 so that your child can participate.

You can also go to your own medical provider. Once your child receives the immunization, you’ll need to submit the Florida 680 form, signed by the doctor, to Mrs. Miriam Lopez in the front office. If you have any questions about the event at the school please contact Miriam Lopez (Miriam.Lopez@ocps.net) or Nicole Sims (Nicole.Sims@ocps.net).

The following vaccines are required for children entering preschool and grades K-12: Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis(whooping cough), measles, mumps, rubella, polio, varicella (chickenpox) and hepatitis B.

Visit ImmunizeFlorida.org to learn more about immunizations your child may need.

Classroom Spotlight

Ms. DeLuca

Ms. DeLuca’s students took part in a Langston Hughes tic-tac-toe activity looking for theme, tone, structure, point of view, and figurative language in his work.

Mr. Johnson

Mr. Johnson’s social studies students conducted a mock civil trial that centered on MGM Movie Studios vs. Honda Motor Company (and whether or not Honda used the likeness of MGM’s James Bond character) without their permission. They loved it and had a great time performing it.

Math Department

In this issue, Ms. Moukaddam would like to highlight all of the amazing lessons she saw in our math classrooms over the last couple of weeks!

Food Rescue Celebration

At the March 7th, 2023 School Board Meeting, an update on OCPS’s Green Schools Program was shared. HCMS has been promoting target 1: Waste Reduction this year by having a Share Table & Food Rescue program.

The update for the OCPS program showed a huge jump in waste reduction:

HCMS is proud to be part of this! As of 3/9, HCMS has donated 5,284.3 pounds of food (16,678 items) to the Salvation Army, and this doesn’t count the waste reduced by having the Share Table.

Congratulations to our 1st and 5th period Student Literacy Leaders, Ms. Moye, and Ms. H (as well as high schooler Maelissa Gooden) for spearheading this initiative and to all at HCMS for taking part in it!

Student Volunteer & Artwork

HCMS student Anani Ayala volunteered at Anytime Fitness to create an original artwork for St. Patrick’s Day and Easter.
