Many Currents: Notes in Transition

Hurricane Florence Response: Since we first shared information about opportunities to respond to needs in the wake of the recent storm (flood crests have not passed yet in some places), we have begun to learn more. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance continues to provide an avenue through gifts we can offer right away and through organized groups we can send from our congregations in months to come, probably for years to come. Word comes about efforts on the part of congregations in Salem Presbytery: from Clemmons Church, from Highland Church, from First Church, Statesville - and more (New Hope Presbytery has devoted a page on its site to response - see link below. This only begins to scratch the surface. Please share information about your plans, and we will pass them along. Neighboring churches can join together in these efforts too. Meanwhile, let me remind you of our effort (see below) to identify and share contacts for mission in every congregation. We'd be grateful for your reports.

Presbytery service:  The Book of Order mandated Committee on Representation functions as presbytery's nominating committee. If you are asked to serve on a committee or otherwise, we hope you will feel led to say yes. We who take vows to serve in the church promise to "be active in government and discipline, serving in the councils of the church; and in [our] ministr[ies] ... to show the love and justice of Jesus Christ?" Frederick Buechner has written, regarding vocation, "the place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet." Let service with sisters and brothers, siblings and colleagues in Salem Presbytery, be a way you fulfill that cause, help perfect our common witness, and testify to the coming reign of God. We ask that pastors and other leaders help us spot talent we might enlist in this cause.

Presbyterian Inter-racial Dialogue

CENTRAL NEIGHBORHOOD CIRCLE MEETING RE: BLACK LIVES MATTER RECOMMENDATION IS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 FROM 10:00-11:30 AM AT CLEMMONS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

At our August Presbytery meeting the Presbyterian Inter-Racial Dialogue (PIRD) clergy introduced the recommendation that Salem Presbytery endorse the Black Lives Matter movement. Click the link below for the recommendation. We have all heard of Black Lives Matter and have formed opinions based on what we have heard, yet many of us have not educated ourselves on what the movement does and does not stand for. Please check out their website linked below, and look at what they believe or visit our resource page, also listed below, to download resources for your congregation or ministry. Included on the resource page as well is a Substitute Motion.
