Hurricane Idalia slammed ashore in Florida and then South Carolina with the ferocity this region hasn't had to endure in some time. She hit our communities in South Carolina with a vengeance flooding roads and hundreds of homes as she made her way.

The storm made landfall in South Carolina last night with 60 mph winds and flooding levels higher than 9 feet at Charleston Harbor, the fifth highest water level ever recorded and only slightly lower than Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Irma in 2017. The damage and destruction to our VOA residences has been significant. Houses and apartments that are home to seniors living with disabilities and mental health disorders — have been flooded.

The people we serve are temporarily homeless, and in need of immediate essentials. The region’s infrastructure was also hit; power lines and water utilities are damaged and it will take many weeks to restore.

Seniors living in our housing in New Bern, NC and the vulnerable veterans we serve across eastern North Carolina are also at risk.

That’s why I’m writing to ask for your help.

Our #1 challenge right now is securing basic necessities and shelter for our residents and many new evacuees who need our help. If you can make a donation using the button below in support of our local hurricane relief efforts, your gift will go towards relief and ongoing support for these seniors.
We would also welcome basic supplies you can purchase and drop off or ship to our Maple Court Veteran Housing program in Durham, NC. From there, our teams will be able to deploy support to our SC programs and make sure our NC veterans, seniors and families at the greatest risk of prepared for the worst.

Having assessed the damage, the scope of need is clear: This hurricane disaster response exceeds what our staff, volunteers and local resources can offer.
