Hurricane Milton: Resources to Stay Informed

Two short weeks ago, SCDRP shared resources and tools to stay informed and prepared for Hurricane Helene. Today, as many communities are still reeling from the devastation caused by Helene, we are re-sharing the below resources as Hurricane Milton exits Florida and moves out into the Atlantic. We encourage everyone to stay informed, follow the instructions of your local emergency managers, and take care of yourselves and one another.

NOAA GOES Satellite Imagery: Hurricane Milton

NOAA's GOES Satellite Image Viewer allows users to view near-real-time satellite images of hurricanes, including Milton. The photo above shows a satellite image of Milton nearing the Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday afternoon.

Up-to-date weather hazards, tropical cyclone forecasts, and observations as hurricanes and tropical storms approach the southeast.

Coastal Emergency Risks Assessment

The ASGS generates real-time storm surge guidance for updating emergency response groups during a tropical or hurricane event.

Compounding Disasters in Gulf Coast Communities: Report

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released a report entitled "Compounding Disasters in Gulf Coast Communities 2020-2021." The report, which was released this year, is particularly relevant as Hurricane Milton impacts communities that are still taking stock of damage from Hurricane Helene. The report concludes that emergency management and disaster response will need to develop new strategies to cope with compounding disasters and respond to the needs of communities in a continual state of recovery. The report finds that systemic inequity issues in many Gulf Coast communities further exacerbate the challenges of long-term disaster recovery. “For too long, America responded to disasters as singular, isolated events. Individual disasters do not occur in isolation amid a community’s history. With each successive punch of overlapping disaster recoveries, the vulnerabilities increase. This heightens the risk that the next event could provide a knock-out blow. These are compounding disasters," says Roy Wright, chair of the committee that authored the report and president and CEO of the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety.

Assessing Damage from Helene

The photo above was taken by a NOAA Satellite on September 28, following Hurricane Helene's landfall. The image provides a stark visual representation of the widespread power outages caused by the storm.

National Geodetic Survey damage assessment imagery: Hurricane Helene Damage

Imagery of damage caused by Helene is being collected in specific areas by NOAA aircraft, identified by NOAA in coordination with FEMA and other state and federal partners. New imagery will be posted as it becomes available.
