Hurricane Nicholas Recap
Hurricane Nicholas brought approximately 1.65” of rain to the Lake Conroe watershed Monday night. Due to releases earlier in the season and evaporation, SJRA did not have to release water from Lake Conroe directly before or during the storm.
Storm Preparations

SJRA employees implemented their standard procedures for a rainfall event, including establishing 24-hour work schedules, testing all equipment, positioning generators and fuel, and otherwise preparing for operations
Working with Partners

The Coastal Water Authority had begun lowering Lake Houston levels on September 12th prior to the storm’s arrival. Both Lake Houston and Lake Conroe reservoirs had plenty of capacity in case of a heavy rainfall event as was originally predicted.

Lake Levels: Lake Conroe and Lake Houston

Lake Conroe began the week at more than a foot below conservation pool and was at a Lake Level of 199.6 ft as TS Nicholas tracked toward the coast (normal pool is 201 ft).

Forecasts did not show the need for additional releases from Lake Conroe.

Lake Houston was lowered well over one foot and was at a Lake Level of 41.18 ft. as TS Nicholas approached. Normal pool for Lake Houston is 42.4 ft.
 
Gates on Lake Houston remained open throughout the duration of the storm. Lake Houston levels can be monitored at https://www.coastalwaterauthority.org/."
