Training with Ryan
Why (and how) to start training for the Amica Insurance Seattle Marathon this spring

The Seattle Marathon isn't until December this year. Why on Earth would we be thinking about training for it in April and May? Because we want to safely build up to the demands for such a challenging event.

Yes, I know there are plenty of books and articles you can find on how to go from zero to marathon in 4 months or even 12 weeks. However, the marathon puts a big demand on your body and, while it's possible to finish a marathon on such limited training, it's safer and less taxing to take more time to prepare.

So what should you do to begin training roughly 7 months out? There are two keys to what you want to do now. You want to train sustainably so you don't burn out before 7 months is up, and you want to set yourself up now to be well prepared for the heart of the training that will happen in the final 3-4 months.

What does that mean? That means slowly but steadily build your running volume, including long runs. You don't need to be into full marathon training with grueling workouts and 20 mile long runs. But get yourself a little closer with 2-3 long runs a month that get ever so gradually longer, and some up-tempo workouts once a week. This will leave you much more prepared when September rolls around to make the most of the heavy training you will be doing at that time.
