Hybrid Worship

September 4, 2022

Welcome to Worship! It's our joy to tell you: No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here.

It's our practice to celebrate communion on the first Sunday of the month. If you're joining online, take a moment to gather the communion elements of your choice.

*Spiritual Formation - September 11*

Spiritual Formation at Shadow Rock

"Sermon Reboot" happens today! This is an informal time with Pastor Ken, going deeper into the morning's scripture and looking at different angles. If you're attending in person, just hang out by the Narthex for the discussion to begin around 11:15 am. If you're attending via Zoom, stay in the Zoom. It may take a few minutes to get going, so Zoomers, warm up your coffee or grab a snack. Thanks for your patience.

9 o'clock Spiritual Formation will re-start NEXT WEEK, September 11. For adults, that will be Pastor Ken's series on diverse approaches to spirituality. For children, that will be a unit called "What's Your Superpower?" We're excited to be welcoming children and families back to Sunday morning formation. For a video overview of this unit (and a bit about Sunday School in general), take a look here.

GATHERING

Welcome and Announcements

Joining Our Voices ~

"It’s the Work of Many Hands"

One by one we gather here for such a time as this

To celebrate with joyful hearts our holy heritage,

People with a mission, anchored in our faith,

Following the Spirit’s call in every time and place.

Chorus:

It’s the work of many hands,

It’s the sound of many voices,

It’s the love of many hearts that make a church. Repeat

Singing, praying, serving now, and speaking from the heart,

All of us have special gifts that make us who we are.

Hopeful and united as one community,

Growing with each other in God’s human family. Chorus

Keep searching the horizon here for evidence of grace.

The gospel message comes alive when others you embrace.

So feed the hungry, help the homeless, let your spirits soar.

Let the love of Jesus Christ live in you more and more. Chorus

Call to Worship

One: Like clay, we arrive at this time of worship:

Many: Shapeless and full of potential, we arrive.

One: Like clay, we prepare for this time of worship:

Many: Stretched and twisted, shaped by our experiences, we prepare.

One: Like clay, we enter this time of worship:

Many: Ready for the warmth of creativity and challenge, we enter.

Singing Our Faith ~ "Walls Marks Our Boundaries"

Walls mark our bound’ries and keep us apart;

Walls keep the world from our eyes and our heart.

Tables are round, making room for one more,

Welcoming friends we had not known before.

Chorus

So build us a table and tear down the wall!

Christ is our host. There is room for us all!

Walls make us sure who is in and who’s out

Walls keep us safe from all question and doubt,

But at a table in open exchange

New ties are formed as our lives rearrange. Chorus

Once we were strangers, divided, alone.

Hate and distrust built a wall stone by stone.

Now at a table the bread that we share.

Joins us to Christ in a circle of care. Chorus

SHARING

Celebrations

At this time, we share moments from our lives: birthdays, anniversaries, works of peace and justice. We celebrate even sorrows and grief as part of a comprehensive view of life.

Invitation to Give

The cost of discipleship is bold and radical. It requires a countercultural giving of possessions and self. Let us risk the safety of the ordinary and choose to build with God by sharing our gifts and resources.

Words of Institution

Shared by Rev. Kenneth Heintzelman

Everyone is welcome to this table! This month, the communion offering supports our Refugee Resettlement Ministry.

A Litany Celebrating Our Table and Community

One: In response to these words given to us by Jesus, let us share a litany celebrating our open table and

community, across time and physical distance. We

gather together in the awe of life.

All: To celebrate our table and community in many forms.

One: We embrace all with unconditional love and gracious

acceptance.

All: All are welcome; all are valued. Our joys are shared and valid. Our losses are shared and valid.

One: Today we celebrate the place of inclusion, unity and the progressive way of justice and life.

All: We commit to life, to worthy and essential deeds and happiness for all.

One: We find a window to mystery and the God of many

understandings through the one we call Jesus and the way he loved and served.

All: Also, we seek the insights of other faiths and spiritual leaders.

One: We are a community of open minds and warm hearts,

All: Striving for and living out greater unity and peace in the world.

One: We seek expressions and experiences of God within,

between and beyond thought, word and action.

All: Together we continue the adventure of humanity.

One: A tiny piece of bread? A single swallow of juice? All this meaning is packed into our sharing?

All: Yes, it is, and more.

LEARNING

Word About Life - Acts 2:42-47

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Awe came upon everyone because many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

SCATTERING

Words for Mission

One: We are all fearfully and wonderfully made. Like clay, may God continue to reform and reshape each of us into our

truest selves, now and every day after.

All: Each day brings new opportunities for stretching, growing, serving. We go into the week, connected and joyful.

One: These are the times.

All: We are the people.

One: All of Creation is blessed.

All: May we love all and serve all.

One: May God be with you.

All: And also with you.

One: Amen.

All: Amen.

Sending Forth Song ~ "Trees of the Field"

You shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace;

The mountains and the hills will break forth before you.

There’ll be shouts of joy, and all the trees of the field

will clap, will clap their hands.

And all the trees of the field will clap their hands, (clap, clap)

The trees of the field will clap their hands, (clap, clap)

The trees of the field will clap their hands (clap, clap)

While you go out with joy.

(Repeat faster)
