Project Spotlight
"Little Island" - Pier 55 Renovation
New York, NY
Introduction & Challenge
This month, we look at the soon to be opened "Little Island" project located on the Hudson River in New York City.

The newly reimagined public space was born after the pier sustained extensive damage during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The following year Billionaire, Barry Diller, worked with the Hudson River Park Trust to design a new public park that could offer New York residents and visitors an escape from city life.

Due to the harsh brackish water of the Hudson River, a solution was needed that could protect the park's critical structures from the detrimental effects of freeze-thaw and chloride ingress.
Solution
Hycrete System W (W1002) was chosen to protect the project from the Hudson River's rough brackish water due to its superior anti-corrosion and waterproofing performance. Our cost-effective solution was able to accelerate the construction schedule and eliminate the need for waterproofing membranes. Hycrete's integral solution saved the contractor a significant amount of time and money.

"Working with Hycrete is always a huge benefit to the overall project schedule. It eliminates days and days of another subcontractor physically applying waterproofing and holding us up with finishing the foundation earlier."
-Thoman Geraci, Ruttura & Sons Construction Co.
Result
Nearly 1000 yards of Hycrete treated concrete was used in the project. Benefits include; no additional labor required, disruptive maintenance and down-time avoided, and no need toreapply coatings every few years. The park opens to the public in the Spring of 2021
