Hyde Jackson Monthly April 22, 2016

Happy Earth Day! In this issue we concentrate on activities related to this day of protecting our community and world. And next week is National Arbor Day so please join us on our community cleanup.

Enjoy!

Main Street Activities

Community Cleanup, Street Tree Maintenance, and Spring Plantings

Saturday, April 30
9:00 am

Celebrate Arbor Day with us on Saturday, April 30 with coffee and snacks while helping us to beautify our stretch down Centre Street by spreading fresh, organic mulch on our street trees, planting flowers, and disposing of litter.

This has been a great activity in which to meet other neighbors who care about our gem of a neighborhood, learn more about Main Street, and get some exercise and fresh air. This year we'll have planting activities for kids.

We'll be meeting at Mozart Playground at 10 Mozart Street (corner of Centre Street) at 9:00 am.

To make sure we have enough tools, hot chocolate, coffee, water, and snacks for kids and adults alike, please RSVP your participation at [email protected] or just call us.

Merchant Sidewalk Sale

Saturday, May 21
10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Stay local and save fuel by shopping in the neighborhood on Saturday, May 21 as Hyde Jackson Square Main Street will be organizing our second annual sidewalk sale.

Stroll down Centre Street, quench your thirst, enjoy tasty treats, and browse for bargains between Jackson Square and Hyde Square. We'll provide entertainment for you as well along Centre with street musicians. And don't forget to enter our raffle when purchasing items along the street.

All participating merchants will have special items on sale or sale items for you. For a preview of participating businesses, we'll have a full list on our website soon.

Centre Street Saves - Inspiring Energy Reduction

On Tuesday, April 19 and Wednesday, April 20 during Earth Day week, partners from the Preservation Green Lab of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Main Street Center, Renew Boston, Eversource, National Grid, and Rise Engineering met storefront business owners to talk about saving energy and increasing profits in their businesses.

April 19 visit to Blue Nile Restaurant from national organizations, local utilities, and partners.

This effort started in January, 2015 when Hyde Jackson Square Main Street began work as one of the first pilot communities of America Saves (in our community it is called Centre Street Saves), a three-year research and development program funded by the Department of Energy and led by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Main Street Center. America Saves works in communities across the country to expedite small business participation in energy retrofit and efficiency programs and support community leaders to help guide small businesses along the process.

Since its inception, Hyde Jackson Square Main Street has been able to sign up 50% of neighborhood storefront businesses. In return for signing up, each business receives an energy snapshot assessment, easy and low-cost energy saving recommendations, and guidance to existing local rebates, incentives, and resources. For our neighborhood businesses, these energy snapshot assessments have shown an average potential savings of over 20% of their energy costs which could result in thousands of savings!

Team visit to the Brendan Behan Pub on April 19.

In our recent visits to small business owners, we spoke with them about how they can take advantage of the City of Boston's long-running energy efficiency programs. Businesses who sign up with Renew Boston can receive a free walk-through assessment, incentives toward the cost of replacement of equipment and fixtures with higher efficiency models, and more.

Over the next several months, we look forward to presenting energy analysis snapshots to small businesses and help connect them to resources that can lead to reduced energy use, increased profits, and a better earth.
