Hyde Jackson Monthly July 4, 2016

We hope that you have a fun and safe 4th of July.

As school ends, Mozart Park once again becomes a venue for great music, dance, and theater (as well as basketball, playing on the monkey bars, and running through the water sprayer.) Read below and review the calendar to see many of the activities that enliven this great park.

This year we will have three different performances of Teatro en el Parque / Theater in the Park on Tuesdays in July. We'll also have performances in both Spanish and English (and supertitles for each as well.) Enjoy the beautiful weather and have fun at all of them.

Mozart Park and Playground will the the site of our 4th annual summer Teatro en el Parque featuring live Spanish and English language theater performed by the local theater troupe Escena Latina Teatro.

The Dragún Summer Series is an evening of free outdoor theater at Mozart Park, in the heart of Jamaica Plain. For three weeks in July, Escena Latina Teatro will present three short plays by Argentine playwright Osvaldo Dragún:

July 12: The Couple from Table 10, in Spanish with English supertitles -- When María and José fall in love they have no idea of the obstacles that society has laid before them.

July 19 : Story of an Abscess, in Spanish with English supertitles -- When a street salesman comes down with a toothache his world turns upside down. Neither his wife nor the dentist can save him.

Also on July 19: Story of the Man Who Became a Dog, in English with Spanish supertitles -- When jobs are scarce a man is willing to do anything it takes to provide for his family.

July 26: The Couple from Table 10, in Spanish with English supertitles -- When María and José fall in love they have no idea of the obstacles that society has laid before them.

In addition to theater performances, Escena Latina Teatro is offering two, free bilingual workshops on consecutive Thursdays for adolescents and young adults interested in learning more about the art of theatre:
July 14: Introduction to Theater
July 21: Theatre as an Agent of Change

If interested in these workshops, please send an email to escenalatina@gmail.com.

The Drag ún Summer Series is made possible with special funding by the New England Foundation for the Arts' Creative City Program, with funding from the Barr Foundation, and additional funding from the City of Boston, Boston Private, El Oriental de Cuba, El Mundo newspaper, and others. Thank you!

Main Street Recap

Beautifying the Neighborhood on April 30

On April 30, we worked alongside 44 volunteers to beautify Centre Street by planting flowers in various locations and shoveling mulch on tree pits for our street trees to help them grow during the spring, summer, and fall. In all, we put mulch on 90 trees and planted almost 200 flowers. Thank you to all of our volunteers that day.   We'll sponsor another flower planting on Sunday, July 24. If interested in helping us, please email us at info@hydejacksonsquare.org.

Sidewalk Sale on May 21

Thank you to the 25 businesses that participated in our Spring Sidewalk Sale on Saturday, May 21. We had some great street musicians, dancing by some merchants (yes, we have it on video), tasty snacks, and nice threads for sale.

We want to give a special thanks to all the volunteers who helped plan the event, set up tables, and clean up after the sale.
